Background[edit]

Franz-Dietrich was qualifying as a mechanic when the Great War broke out. Like the rest of his generation he signed up immediately and his skills led him to the air force. He spent most of the war on reconnaissance flights, but early in 1917 he was shot down and spent the remaining time in British captivity. After returning to Germany in 1919, he maintained a struggling workshop for a while but was soon contacted by his former commander who wanted to hire him as a pilot on an expedition run by the Society. After the success of the expedition, which Dietrich rescued from some trouble, he was taken on full-time as a pilot, chauffeur and general dogsbody by a wealthy member of the Society. Franz-Dietrich was delighted to have a secure job which let him see the world in a way he could never have imagined as a boy, but when his benefactor died, leaving Franz-Dietrich as his sole heir, he decided to become a full member himself. Although he is as angry as most Germans with the unfairness of Versailles, his experience of war plus his international life have convinced him of the pointlessness of warfare. Franz-Dietrich still speaks English with a strong German accent and despite his new-found wealth, is still more comfortable with machines than high society.
