Fu
Image of Good Fortune
Most people tend to have a difficult time trying to decide which is more strange about Rui-en Smith, the fact that he insists on wearing long sleeves and pants even on the hottest day or he is a handsome young man of Chinese descent... with short bright red hair. Either way, he dresses very dapper, almost always wearing something red, often a vest or something pinned to his lapel. But always, it conceals the fantastic tattoos done all over his body, all drawn into his flesh in different styles, but all showing a scene from China, mountains towering over an ocean. Perched on his nose are a pair of simple black-framed glasses that lend him something of a scholar's (or a geek's) air as well.
In his Mien, the tattoos come to life, etched in bright gold, and Fu's appearance becomes more obviously of good fortune, even if one doesn't understand the symbols on his skin. His build is somewhat plumper, giving him a jollier look, with his coloring, including the gold-lined paintings on his body bolder. Dark red hair takes on a somewhat feathery texture, while his nails become longer, just enough to be noticed as effeminate, and gilded with gold at the tips. The final detail that completes the image is a sort of heat, a smile with a hint of madness that can threaten even the sanest person to take a leap of faith.

History[edit]

Some people are just born lucky. He wasn't handsome, he wasn't rich, but things would just fall together for him, allowing him to glide though his youth and college with ease. Of course it wasn't perfect, but where it mattered most, the guy's life was almost absurd in his good fortune. Unfortunately, that luck was not always good. Soon after his graduation from college with a degree in computer science, something... happened. People noticed it as his luck running out, and him changing. Instead of a carefree youth, he buckled down under the pressure and began getting places by hard work alone. Perhaps he wondered what happened, but it gave him a sense of pride to be living well under his own power.
But that isn't the same lucky youth as before. Just a painted man of stone and feathers who took his place.
The youth was stolen away, his tremendous luck catching the eye of the Collector, a True Fae who loved nothing more than turning unusual souls into works of art. For five years, the young man was frozen still, a living painting made with needles and brushes, freezing without clothes and learning to be as unfeeling as the paper he was made from, gazed and toyed with by hands that still wake him up screaming. His escape was blurred, but he can remember being pulled down and dressed in actual clothes as someone helped him run away, back though the Thorns and back home. The group of refugees all were separated and the youth found himself back where he had been taken. After a short time, a woman in all red found him and took him from the place, helping him recover.
Then he got a look at his face, and could not recognize the person in the mirror. Needless to say, the new Changeling was not at all happy at being completely transformed from one person to another, from twenty-three to eighteen, from plain to handsome, from Caucasian to Chinese, to name the most obvious. It took weeks for the Fairest to decide on a name, Fu, luck. Though he was not as unconsciously fortunate as before, he could share the fortune that still thrived inside of him with others, and celebrate being alive again, feeling again. He easily chose the ecstasy of the Southern Court.
It's been almost a year for Fu since returning, and as he is a teenager again, he decided to start again, especially since a good amount of his degree was useless, five years later. When he told the Changeling that he intended to go to college again, her answer was to spin a completely new identity for him to see and thrive in the world. So now Fu is at Pine Falls, far away from home again, but at least now... it was his choice.

Tattoos[edit]

The tattoos take the form of an idyllic Chinese landscape overlooking the ocean. From his waist down is water and ocean, with a dragon among the waves, with golden fish about, with cranes on the shoreline. His chest displays a pine-covered mountain range, while his arms have chrysanthemums and narcissus all over, with creatures like butterflies and magpies hidden within the garden. While all of the creatures and plants are symbols of good luck in China, the style of the tattoos range from Japanese to Mesoamerican. The only consistency in the artwork is its inconsistency.

Rui-en Smith[edit]

Rui-en Smith is the adopted identity of the Fairest named Fu. The documents claim him to be adopted from China by Peter and Leona Smith, and the information from a decent public school in Los Angeles show him to be a quiet, but excellent student that had a particular love for computers and art that easily got a scholarship into Spencer University. There is a mention of some sort of emotional trauma that Rui-en refuses to speak of, allowing the changeling to have his moments of irrationality. Due to the faux amis of his name, Fu normally asks to be called Ryan to reduce confusion or the possibility of being teased 'again.'

Mortal Lines Made[edit]

When Fu first returned to the mortal world, after getting the hang on the whole thing and becoming Rui-en, he ended up making friends that still live on today. What made for a particular what-the-fuck was the four discovering that their other three friends were all attending Spencer as well. Such is the mischief of fate. The three crazies are:
Ronald O'Houlahan - A purebred Irish-American, Ron was raised on the stories of the Fair Folk, and is dead terrified of them. He can recite books of lore about them and always wears something of cold iron on him. Refuses to talk about the 'Vodka Incident' and looks worriedly at Ryan when it's mentioned. Major: Literature
Timothy "Scaredy" Scanfield - Tim is one of the most high-strung people on Earth, but he also has a remarkable recovery time. Ronald and him have been friends since they were small, Ron torturing him with stories about the Fair Folk. He is normally fairly sedate, just very easily wound up. He was the first to meet Ryan as well. Major: Undeclared
Warren Greyfield - Warren joined the duo in middle school, becoming friends with Ronald and then being introduced to Tim in high school. He has an intellectual masochistic streak, picking classes that are mind-numbingly difficult for him every year. Major: Organic Chemistry.
