Gudlaeif Gathering Gloom

He is here because he is expected to be here, because his elder brother is unable to go, because the wolf took his legs. It's not that Gudlaeif is a disappointment -- he's not -- but he's not the fighter his brother Eidvar is, and what they needed for this quest was a fighter. Gudlaeif is sweet: he tells stories of days gone by, when his family was great, and when the elves would come to them. The stories he tells are glorious to hear, but they always have a hero. And that hero was a swordsman.

Now Gudlaeif needs new stories. He represents his family and his presence somehow feels reassuring. He is a great listener, and his eyes dance with understanding when you speak to him. He'll offer you a game, and the pieces on the board are moved with a practiced and elegant flair. He'll even give you a handicap, if you want it; you'll still lose, and as he captures your baron, he seems almost as surprised as you are. No, nobody is complaining that it's Gudlaeif and not Eidvar that's here -- all Eidvar could do was hunt; fight; kill. Gudlaeif is better company, for now. We just don't know if he can actually do anything. He has an infectious smile, that sword on his hip, and the constant awareness that he has no right to be here. He's not earned it. His fancy manners won't help him against the first orc he meets.
