Government[edit]

The planet is ruled by a tyrannical dictator named the Overseer. Nobody knows if this person is a man or a woman as he or she always appears clad in a customised and fearsome crimson Power Armour. By means of fear, intimidation, violence and spying on the populace as well as military might the Overseer rules with an iron grip since the rise of this government. The Imperium, by large, doesn’t mind as the productive output of the Planet (mainly weapons and ammunition) has increased since the Overseer leads the noble houses.

The government maintains its own, standing army of the Overseer. Any able bodied man or woman can join the army but most nobles rather join their houses local militia. So the army usually recruits from all sections of the hive (and sometimes they even mob up people from the lowest levels). Only the very best make it into the Hastus Special Forces (HSF), an elite cadre of soldiers wearing crimson battle armour also serving as bodyguards of the Overseer. Law enforcement typically is under the purview of the local section governor but there exists a secret special police which is directly working for the Overseer.

Hive Hastus[edit]

Hive Hastus overview

Note: blue lines denotes the fast public transport system by rail

The only hive on the planet is home for about 6 billion citizens. This isn’t your typical hive as it features a roughly ellipsoid ground plan and has the shape of a sphere cut in half, so it is wider than high, with several huge spires and towers located at the top levels, protruding high up into the sky.

It is "logically" separated into three “levels”: the lower city (industrial zones and lower class residences), the middle city (middle class residences) and upper city, mostly spires and a large glass domes (upper class).

The central upper city sits under a large glass dome and enjoys beautiful sunshine most of the time while the inhabitants of the middle and under city dwell in dim or bright neon lights and under a steel sky.

About 10%-15% of the hive is uninhabitable due to toxic waste, collapse of ceilings and/or building or even worse reasons. Such sections mainly are located in the lower city's outer skirts, especially in the northwest.

The hive features two large spaceports (Hastus East and Hastus West) connecting the city with the orbit.

The Upper Hive[edit]

Here the noble houses and their thralls, lackeys and employees dwell in large towers or mansions, carriages ride between the houses and opulent and ample parks exist for entertainment and recreation purposes. The massive central tower called The Aegis features a hexagonal ground plan and houses the government. This is a highly restricted area.

The top six Noble houses each have their own towers adjacent to The Aegis. Each tower has a circular ground plan, and a cylindrical shape. Most of these complexes do not only contain the large and luxurious housings but also laboratories and the most advanced factory complexes owned by the houses as well as the barracks of the house militia.

The largest structure found in the upper city is the Gazebo, a large dome with a glass ceiling that serves as an amusement park for the nobles. It features an artificial, yet seemingly natural landscape with forests, streams and luxurious hotels, gambling halls etc. This dome mainly caters for the nobles and some of the wealthier middle class citizens.

The Middle Hive[edit]

Here the middle class dwells in city blocks and smaller, nice houses. Most of the people work either in the upper city or, more commonly, in the industrial centres in the outer ring of the Lower City. They commute using the available public transport.

The Lower Hive[edit]

Here the lower class citizens dwell in large tenement blocks or ramshackle housings. The lower and the closer to the outskirts one gets the worse it becomes. In some areas gangs rule whole city districts and most wards are small and independent economies, some even have their own dialect. Law enforcement gets lax and people usually are out on their own here.

The Under Hive[edit]

Desolate, dark, damp, dangerous. These four D-words sum it up, really. Abandoned, long forgotten or collapsed areas, a few still working waste dumps or recycling facilities can be found down here along with horrific mutants, vile scum and worse. In the darkness, strange things stir and stalk the empty, littered corridors. There’s no law enforcement and everyone is out on their own here. Nobody right in their mind would set a foot into the under hive. Still there are many abandoned areas where equipment and knowledge long forgotten can be found and sold for a good price if a scavenger party returns from the trip alive.

Outside of the hive[edit]

The Thorn was a factory/lab complex which was destroyed by an immense explosion 20 years ago killing thousands of workers and specialists from various noble houses. Speculations afloat claim that the explosion was triggered by internal fighting between two of the houses. Some even claim that it was done by the government as a punishment. The truth remains a mystery though. Most of the complex is now empty but dark and sinister figures are rumoured to use this area for clandestine meetings or try to salvage high-tech equipment.

Basric Military Camp is a high security military installation of the government and also houses the 16th Guytogan Guards Rifle Regiment. Inside the camp there is another large science and manufacturing complex called The Flame. It is a box-shaped complex with a side length of nearly 2 kilometres and a height of about 300 metres. This is an even higher restricted area than the military camp itself or the Aegis and some claim that there’s a titan in there.

Shantytowns can be encountered close to the outer hive walls where people live in even worse conditions than in the lower city. These towns are mostly autonomous and largely independent from the city and really are dangerous places to be.

Ranches and Farms These are few as the planet generally is inhospitable and few plants grow here that are of use to a human. There are a few herbivorous and carnivorous animals roaming the plains that can be used for making leathers but there are only few people on the planet who specialise in the hunt. Most food, clothing etc. is either manufactured or brought in from other worlds (mostly Hesiod's Wake).

The noble houses[edit]

The noble houses run all larger businesses, from food growing in special green houses to manufacturing weapons and ammunition for the armies of Guytoga and the Imperial Army. A council of the six largest, mightiest and most influential houses exists that watches over all houses and regulates commercial affairs. This council is in constant contact with (and controlled by) the government.

There exist 15 noble houses (by bloodline) but a large gap exists in power and influence between the top six and the other nine

The most powerful six houses are (in order of power and their main field of commerce):

- Atras (small arms and ammunition), head is Aleon Atras

- Kellorn (integrated circuits, range finders etc.), head is Ralph Kellorn

- Maderno (ammunition), head is Katra Maderno

- Dragkon (heavy arms), head is Ron Dragkon

- Parsic (food), head is Lydia Parsic

- Lagos (health care), head is Jon Lagos

All houses cower before the mighty Overseer and are constantly out to please the dictator and earn the favour of the government. Each house has a standing and well-trained militia and occasional fights erupt over different matters from time to time. As long as production volumes and security of the hive are not in danger, the government turns a blind eye on such affairs. The loser of such a fight must either pay large sums of money (reparations) but can live on albeit with a much lower standing, or the whole house and its holdings are destroyed and its members are exiled (or better flee) to the lower levels of the hive.

Damphit district[edit]

Damphit overview

The district (or ward) you live in is located in the northwest of the lower hive and is called Damphit. Under a high, dimly lit steel sky ugly, dirty and run-down blocks of five to six stories high tenements provide home to the poorest inhabitants of the hive still working for a living. Most people living here have to commute to the factory complexes a couple of hours every day.

Law enforcement already is lax and rather ineffective (but allegedly not corrupt!) and crime unfortunately a very common occurrence. Some gangs go on rampage in the nights and battle to increase their turf. Battles for a couple of rooms in a tenement or a whole building level are not unheard of.

Locations[edit]

A couple of well-known locations in Damphit include:

- Carmin’s, a bar run by a tall man called Carmin

- Sundown, a bar/club run by a sleazy, greasy guy called Bordack

- Silver Fingers, a brothel, rumoured to be owned by The Colonel

- The Bleeding Edge, a bar near your hab stack where shady people meet

- The Technical Shoppe, run by Horace Bendfield, he sells all kind of technical equipment and if he trusts the client he occasionally sells ammunition or weapons from a very limited selection.

- Hours abound, a 24/7 drug store chain with stores all across the hive

- The Alm’s house, run by Mattis Naton, catering for the poorest of the poor

- Damphit Law Enforcement, this station is run by Melchor Arrias and is already strained to its limits

Factions[edit]

The Colonel

Leader: Gallus "The Colonel" Holmes

A cruel man who is the head of the organised crime in Damphit. His organisation controls most of the crime in Damphit, especially racketeering and the brothels. He also has good connections to the Black Market.

The Black Market

Background: Contacting the black market is the easiest way to get access to a large variety of ammunition or weapons. Law prohibits to carry weapons, still most people do. The local contact is Carmin (who runs a bar) who also is said to have contacs who are always interested in salvaged tech equipment.

Your relationship: on a matter of business

The Night-teens

Leader: Wicked Mike

Background: a small group of drug addicted young gals and lads with a focus on needless and outright violence. They rank high on the (small) wanted list of the Damphit Law Enforcement as they attack innocent citizens as well as other gang members.

Your relationship: hostile; several times you've clashed with them violently

The Collectas

Leader: Sedrick Fandalore

Background: a very small group focussing on salvaging tech equipment from the depths of the hive and other abandoned areas. They seem to be very successful and boast good equipment. They usually don't like it if others cross their path

Your relationship: neutral; now that you've decided to get into the scavenging business they will be your most fierce competitors. Up until know you haven't clashed with them and they don't know of your ambitions yet

The Reapers

Leader: Raphel Stark

Background: they simply concentrate on drug dealing and occasional clashes with other violent gangs, especially the Night-teens.

Your relationship: neutral; they don't mess with your business, you don't mess with theirs

The Silhouettes

Leader: unknown

Background: A new gang has just arisen in Damphit. They call themselves "The Silhouttes" and it's said they only accept females in their ranks. Nobody really knows what they are up to.

Your relationship: unknown; you haven't met them up until now

Accessible areas[edit]

The next, directly accessible area on the same level are:

- Ward Six, a rather dangerous and run-down area where it only gets worse as there is even less law enforcement, the ward tends to be a good proving and exercise ground for gangs wanting to hone their fighting skills. Also there are rumours of several under-hive access points spread across this ward.

- Arlington, a working class residential district, a litte bit better than Damphit, the majority of its inhabitants are a hard-working lot and there's less crime

- Celciphore, a large former residential district closed by the officials after a riot and a devastating fire, yet is still is accessible by crawling through a couple of narrow maintenance shafts or inoperative drainage system tubes
