Yumi Suenami (末浪由実) / Demon Hunter Yumi[edit]

"O soul of mine, under shadow's sway...
Let every demon become my prey...
Let vengeance tear my chains asunder...
Let the hunted...become the hunter!
Dark Transfiguration...COMMENCE!"

Defining Moment: Yumi Suenami's first two days in Roanapur were a nightmare. On the first night, she lost her older sister Yuri to a powerful demon that tortured her and devoured her alive despite Yumi's best efforts to save her, and then hunted her throughout the night with the intent of doing the exact same thing to her. On the second day, she was chased through the city by scumbags, then ridiculed and laughed at by many of the sisters from the sorority that her sister had been a part of when she tried to tell them what had happened to Yuri, culminating in Yumi finally snapping and killing the head of the sorority, Hitomi Nishimura, in a fit of utter rage. Yumi was thrown in jail for killing Nishimura and viciously beaten to within an inch of her life by a band of dirty cops, soon before another demon attacked the police station and started killing and devouring everyone. Yumi, scared for her life, in excruciating pain and at the end of her rope, accepted Kanzoutsukamu's offer of power and awakened as a mahou shoujo, killing the monster without mercy before unleashing herself upon every other demon she could find through the night. The old Yumi died that night, and from the ashes, a new Yumi was born. Granted with powers that enable her to take on the demons on their level, Yumi has made it her sworn mission to kill every last demon she can, as well as those who use them against others.

Badass Type: Kickass (+2 bonus to all Physical rolls)

Flavas:

  • You Are Awesome, And You Should Feel Awesome - Though her main talent is kicking ass, Yumi can bust out a fiery speech with the best of them. By spending 1 BP during a pre-battle scene, she can give every Badass present and allied with her 1 extra BP.
  • That All You Got? - Though she prefers to keep at range, Yumi can take a hit like nobody's business. She can spend 3 BP to negate all damage taken in a single instance.
  • Dark Angel Nemesis - In times of great need, Yumi can burn 2 BP to unleash her Trigger Form, a second form that supercharges her offensive ability, but places her body in a great deal of strain. When in Dark Angel Nemesis mode, Yumi gains a +2 bonus to her attack rolls (giving her essentially a +7 total bonus!), but at the cost of losing 1 BP for every round the form is active until she either chooses to end it or loses all her BP. She can only unleash her Trigger once per general fight. Since Yumi has acquired Umbra and Anima, Dark Angel Nemesis has taken a noticeably different form. Yumi's hair and skin now go full white with glowing eyes of solid gold, her wings become pure black tendrils of shadow energy inlaid with silver spiritual energy, and her black cloak seems to come alive, becoming nothing less than a living shadow surrounding Yumi's armored form.
  • Martial Artist - While her skills in gunplay and archery are top-notch, Yumi's history as a vicious brawler is not to be taken lightly. Her kicks are capable of shattering legs and caving ribcages in, her punches are capable of breaking jaws and crushing windpipes, and if she gets her hands on you, she's capable of ugly damage. And that's just what she can do without a weapon. Yumi can spend 1 BP to make a melee attack do 1 BP worth of damage for every 2 points over the defender rather than every 4.
  • Gun Fu - Yumi is a student of the deadly Gunner Saint, and Sylvia made sure she learned how to shoot and shoot well. When she has a gun or other ranged weapon in her hands, Yumi gains a +1 bonus to all attacks with that weapon, and when fighting mooks, she can make a single ranged weapon attack do 1 BP of damage for every 2 ponts over the defender instead of every 4.

Gear:

Mahou Shoujo Form:

  • Umbra and Anima (+2 Weapons): Though Yumi used to wield a crossbow by the name of Dextera Ultionis, after finally putting down her nemesis, the Creeping Chaos with a Thousand Faces, and welcoming her sister back into her life, she has acquired and bound to her these two new pieces of deadliness from her ally and mentor Sylvia. Umbra and Anima (Shadow and Soul in the Latin) are two beautiful guns in the style of the Beretta 92-FS, with a high-polished blue finish, the hammer, trigger and other furniture a mirror-polished steel, solid black wood grips from some otherworldly plane with angels with intricately detailed wings inlaid in silver, and intricate runework on the slides that glow a faint silver when Yumi channels her normal magic through them, and a sinister red when Yumi channels her formidable hatred through them. They infuse any bullet that is fired through them with shadow and spiritual energy to affect demons and other supernatural beings, and Yumi often enchants bullets with powerful elemental and other spells to fire through them, with devastating effects for her opposition.
In Dark Angel Nemesis, Umbra and Anima seem to come alive, blazing with shadow and spiritual power, and their bullets become pure blasts of the same. She can also combine the two powers, unleashing a swarm of wraiths to tear her enemies apart.
  • Secondary Weapons: In addition to Umbra and Anima, Yumi can also conjure a swarm of razor-edged knives that she can launch at supersonic speed. They used to be her primary weapons in mahou shoujo form, but when Yumi built and bound Dextera Ultionis to her in order to take advantage of Sylvia's gun training, they became relegated to the role of secondary weapons for dealing with cultists, summoners and other humans that get her in a serious vengeful mood. In addition, Yumi also occasionally makes use of two enchanted fighting knives that she uses in melee.
  • Shadow Armor (+1 Armor): In mahou shoujo form, Yumi's leather jacket, pants and boots become a nice set of form-fitting leather armor with silver accents, and the red scarf she wears transforms into a black cloak held in place by a gothic silver and ruby amulet. Her skin gets noticeably paler in mahou shoujo form, and her eyes glow a solid gold, especially when she gets angry.

Normal Form:

  • Sig-Sauer P-228 - Yumi's primary sidearm in normal form, which has a 13-round mag. Yumi usually uses hollow-point bullets for their stopping power against unarmored targets.
  • Leather Jacket - One of Yumi's first purchases in Roanapur, its tough hide makes for decent protection in a knife-fight, but doesn't do much against bullets.
  • Double Edged Dagger - Yumi's other weapon for those times when she's feeling less than merciful. Both edges have been honed to razor sharpness. She usually keeps the weapon up her left sleeve for fast deployment.

Backstory[edit]

Yumi's parents died in a car crash when she was ten and her sister Yuri was twelve. The two spent the next six years of their lives in foster care, the first two years at an orphanage and then with a drunken asshole of a foster father, the latter time a period that Yumi would later call Jigoku no Yotose -- the "Four Years of Hell". While Yuri was quite responsible for her age due to having to take care of Yumi, Yumi was the troublemaker, who, while she was a superb athlete, would always be getting into trouble with the school for frequent fights with others. When Yuri graduated from high school, she moved out and took Yumi with her to live on their own until Yumi finished high school, with Yuri taking a part-time job at the local grocery to provide for the both of them. Yuri went to Kanokon University to study medicine, and joined the Kanokon chapter of Delta Kappa Phi during her first year while Yumi continued going to high school. It was during Spring Break of 1990 that the head of the sorority, Hitomi Nishimura, got the idea to take the sorority on a grand tour through each of the major cities of Thailand.

Yumi insisted upon going with Yuri when she found out about the sorority's plan to go to Thailand -- Yumi never liked the idea of Yuri-nee leaving her behind, especially if it meant having to go back to living with their foster father, Komura. The first few nights in Thailand were pretty educational, as Yumi got to sample some of the local cuisine, take in some of the more exciting sights with Yuri, and even talk to some of the local kids, who Yumi enjoyed interacting with. But everything would change when a wrong turn and a bad storm during the sorority's trip to Hat Yai, one of Thailand's more popular tourist attractions, would land the sorority in Roanapur instead. The storm continued through the evening, and this combined with bureaucratic bullshit would conspire to strand the girls in the city for the rest of the night. Hitomi Nishimura, though good at planning out a sorority trip, was a spoiled and arrogant prima donna who would throw hissy fits when things and people didn't go her way and considered anyone who wasn't as rich as she was to be lower than her, which did not help matters in the city one bit. Hitomi was a jerk to both Yumi and Yuri Suenami because of their working class status, which earned her the dislike of both sisters.

Yumi's first night in Roanapur was one of tragedy and terror. Yumi and Yuri tagged along with the other girls as they toured the more tourist-friendly bars in Roanapur. At some point, the two were separated from the others, and in trying to find them again, the sisters quickly got lost. Neither of them saw the demon in the alleyway until it was too late. Yuri was pulled right into the alleyway by one of the thing's many tentacles, and when Yumi rushed in to save her, she was not prepared for what she saw. The demon tortured Yuri by means of channeling energy through its tentacles and into her body and by spraying her with thousands of tiny needles with pain-enhancing poison. Every time Yumi tried to help her, she was either smacked into a wall or into the ground by a tentacle or blasted down by a beam from one of the Thing's thousand glowing eyes. Yumi finally got her chance to try to hurt it when she rooted through a nearby dumpster and found a gun belonging to a dead man inside, but as she soon found out, the gun didn't do a thing against the demon -- and neither did anything else she either swung or threw at it. Yumi could do nothing but watch as her beloved sister was dragged into the thing's circular maw by its tentacles and eaten alive. As Yuri was being eaten, she begged Yumi to run and not look back. Yumi spent the rest of the night trying to evade the demon, running and hiding in order not to get eaten herself, while at the same time dodging the various scum that populated Roanapur's streets at night. She does not know what made it decide to stop hunting her -- whether it gave up, caught something else of interest or was interrupted -- but when she was finally safe for the moment, she booked a room with a local hotel that spoke English with what was left of her money, locked the door and broke down.

The next morning, Yumi wandered through the city looking for the other members of Delta Kappa Phi, just as lost as she was when the demon attacked. The sixteen-year-old girl quickly attracted the attention of lowlifes who wanted to do bad things to her, and Yumi had to lose them in several harrowing chases in which every one of her athletic skills were put to the test. At the same time, Maki Shino, Yuri's friend from high school who was also part of the sorority, was worried about the Suenamis, and organized a search party to find them. By the time Maki's search party found Yumi, the younger Suenami was frantic, scared and not exactly in the best frame of mind, and was not believed when she told everyone about how her sister had been eaten alive by a monster from beyond. The search party could not find Yuri, and when they returned to the other girls, and Yumi told them of what had happened, those who were not a part of Maki's search party laughed their asses off, which further agitated Yumi. Hitomi wished to leave the city immediately despite Maki's insistence that Yuri was still out there and still alive. When Maki's protests proved to be too much for Hitomi to take, Hitomi verbally ripped into Maki about Yuri, telling her straight out that she did not care about Yuri, that looking for her and Yumi had been a complete waste of valuable time, that if she had been eaten, it was less than she deserved for 'dragging the sorority down'; that she had brought whatever had happened to her on that night upon herself; and worst of all, that she was glad that Yuri was gone, so she couldn't 'pollute' the air that she and her richer friends breathed, and that the only thing that would have been better was if Yumi had disappeared right along with Yuri, just to make her day complete. Unfortunately, Hitomi had said this all right in front of Yumi, who was coming off of a very scary first night and first morning in a very dangerous city, having just lost her sister who was her primary source of support for six long years, and it proved to be the final straw.

Yumi snapped and attacked Hitomi, fighting off the other sorority members when they tried to stop her and then pursuing her through Roanapur's streets before cornering her and pounding her head into the pavement in a savage rage until she stopped moving. It didn't take long for the police to catch up with Yumi following Hitomi's death, and she ended up in the local lockup. The cops, worse than any cops Yumi had ever dealt with back home, were not merciful with her, beating the living shit out of her in the interrogation room before throwing her into a holding cell.

Another demon attacked the police station that very night and started killing and devouring the cops within. Yumi was in excruciating pain from the beating she had received, worse than any she had ever gotten from Komura, and though she hated the cops that had done this to her, the way they were dying filled Yumi with stark terror for her own life. It reminded her far too much of the moment when she lost her sister, and she very much did not want to die like she believed Yuri had. Kanzoutsukamu appeared to Yumi in her cell, offering Yumi the power to destroy the monster that was attacking the station. Yumi accepted, and in a rush of power and agony, she Awakened. What happened next was a second unleashing of pure hellish rage as Yumi broke loose from the cell and engaged the demon in a desperate and furious battle to the death. Yumi savagely tore into the monster with dozens of conjured knives, and as the monster finally died and Yumi sent it screaming into the void, something awoke within her. The next few hours saw Yumi flying through the city, thoroughly enjoying the power she now possessed and unleashing herself on every demon in sight. By the end of the night, no fewer than six to seven demons were dead by Yumi's hand. And Yumi now had a new purpose. No longer would she live in fear of demons and be their prey. From now on, every ravening thing from beyond she encountered would be her prey. And the monster that took her sister from her would pay the ultimate price when she caught up with it. The Demon Hunter was born.

Over the next few years, Yumi would make Roanapur her own. Through the tutelage of Sylvia, the Gunner Saint, and others, Yumi would grow in power, learning to handle herself in and out of Awakened Form and forging herself into a weapon. Yumi was absolutely merciless in dealing with demons, and over time, her hatred extended not just to the demons that preyed upon the city, but upon anyone who dared to use them against other humans. She soon made a name for herself, not only as one of the deadliest demonslayers in Roanapur, but as an assassin who exclusively targeted summoners, demon cultists and others known to traffic in the demonic.

Powers[edit]

Yumi has been at the mahou shoujo game for a while, and has a fairly decent grasp at how to use magic.

  • She can command shadow and spiritual energy for a variety of purposes, including building weapons, teleportation, and even creating animate constructs.
  • She can transmute items into short-lived weapons using her blood, or simply destroy them outright.
  • She can see into and move through 108-dimensional space, giving her an edge against demons that like to hide in higher dimensions and attack her through them.
  • She can see into the souls of people and demons and even make attempts at exorcism.
  • She can create potent enchantments on weapons and ammunition for nasty purposes.
  • She can conduct a ritual to divine a location or even track someone, though she requires something belonging to the being in question.
  • She can sense if her sister is in supernatural danger and use her power to help her provided she has something belonging to her.

Attacks[edit]

Yumi primarily uses enchanted bullets in conjunction with channeling her power through Umbra and Anima:

  • Umbra Immolation: Yumi shadow-charges a fire-enchanted bullet and fires it through Umbra, causing a terrible explosion that burns enemies alive in shadowfire.
  • Umbra Freezing Maelstrom: Yumi shadow-charges an ice-enchanted bullet and fires it through Umbra, causing her enemy to freeze solid and break apart, five homing blasts erupting out of them to seek out and freeze other foes.
  • Anima Disruption: Yumi spirit-charges a bullet enchanted to tear into a demon on the existence level. This attack is fired through Anima.
  • Anima Vengeance: Yumi spirit-charges a bullet enchanted to make a demon relive its worst acts upon humans through the eyes of those it did them upon. This attack is fired through Anima.
  • True Devil's Requiem: Yumi's finishing attack with Umbra and Anima, this channels shadow and spiritual energy directly through both guns, unleashing a deadly storm of black, silver and crimson energy which rains down upon her enemy in true Bullet Hell fashion and utterly annihilates anything in the general vicinity.

Family[edit]

  • Toshiro Suenami (father, deceased)
  • Kaori Suenami (mother, deceased)
  • Yuri Suenami (older sister, living)
  • Masato Komura (foster father, living)
  • Midori Komura (foster mother, unknown)

Relationships[edit]

NPC[edit]

  • Sylvia Fan Pei Hsi, the Gunner Saint: Sylvia is a magical girl who took Yumi under her wing soon after her contract with Kanzoutsukamu and taught her much of what she knows about demons and magic. She's known as the Gunner Saint because of the religious motif of her outfit and her formidable skills with the dual magical revolvers that she favors for fighting demons and rival magical girls. Sylvia most often works with Mr. Chang as a supernatural troubleshooter, with most of Yumi's early jobs having her assisting Sylvia in taking down demons, cultists and the occasional summoner who tried to make trouble for him. She has also lent aid to the Church of Violence on a number of occasions, usually involving taking out rival arms dealers, cultists, and those involved in the underground trade of tomes used to summon demons. She has a very standoffish relationship with Anton Lamonte, who she knows was once a summoner, and doesn't trust the man one bit. Sylvia is one of the only mahou shoujo who has fought Yumi's enemy, the Creeping Chaos with a Thousand Faces, and lived to tell the tale. She lost her entire team to the Awakened Demon on that horrible night -- Steel Witch Haruka, Fate Guardian Masami, Fire Invoker Ruby Heart, and her sempai, Crystal Warrior Marian, whose death bore a very troubling parallel to what happened to Yumi's sister, Yuri Suenami. Sylvia has never been the same since that night, and Yumi has sworn to avenge the deaths of Sylvia's fallen sisters-in-arms as well as her own sister's torture and the loss of her existence to the Awakened Demon.
  • Anton Lamonte: Once upon a time, Anton was a freelance demonologist who hired out to syndicates in need of supernatural firepower for jobs. But when he hired out his services for a demon cult that Yumi was hired to take down, the cult's leader recognized Anton as a former member of a powerful secret society in the occult underground, one which Anton had left after a falling out over their vile practice of torturing people to turn them into vectors for demonic possession. The leader, seeking to curry favor with the society in question, used his sorcery to turn the demon Anton summoned against him, had him beaten to within an inch of his life, and then, as a final humiliation, sought to have Anton sacrificed to the very demon he summoned. Despite Yumi's hatred for summoners (which is equal to her hatred of demons), she saved Anton's life and killed the leader and the demon that Anton helped to summon. He has since become something of a loremaster of things occult and demonic, with his extensive library containing many tomes of forgotten lore about demons, among them a certain volume by a certain mad Arab. Because many of the tomes of Anton's library are quite valuable to summoners, Anton takes their theft VERY seriously, and Yumi will often get hired to retrieve the tomes in question before they are used to unleash big bad nastiness upon the city. From time to time, Anton also feeds Yumi info on various goings-on in the occult underground, including info on demon cults and what they're up to, as well as summoners that Yumi has taken contracts on. Anton knows that he is only alive today because of Yumi, and Yumi has made it very clear what she will do to him if she finds out that he was involved in another demonic summoning, and it's not going to be pretty.
  • Yuri Suenami, the Starlight Sentinel: For four long years, Yumi thought that her older sister was dead. One does not normally survive being eaten alive by a demon, much less an Awakened Demon, and especially not over four years. But through an accident of demonic awakening and a sheer refusal to die, Yuri has returned to Roanapur, where she was rescued from scumbags by BlackRoseWhisper and Longshot, and then reunited with Yumi. But while Yumi's older sister is alive, she is not whole. Much of her existence has been consumed by the Creeping Chaos with a Thousand Faces, and most of her memories are gone, but she has fought hard to hold on to the memories she has of her little sister. Because of the nature of her ordeal at the hands of the Creeping Chaos, Yuri appears to be the same age as she was on that horrible night while in her normal form, and she bears the distinctive scars of her torture at the Awakened Demon's hands on her back. As a newly minted and reawakened mahou shoujo, Yuri is possessed of a very strong protective instinct and a desire to save lives. She wants to help her sister how she can in this city, won't hesitate to kill if it means saving and protecting others, and will not tolerate anyone who seeks to hurt Yumi or make her suffer, physically or psychologically. However, she does not share Yumi's desire for vengeance, nor the brutality that her sister sometimes displays in dealing with especially hated enemies -- in fact, the only time she displays anything close to Yumi's level of fury is if a demon or maou shoujo tries to drain off a piece of her soul or that of Yumi or any of her friends, owing to her experience at the hands of the Thing Full of Spiders; or when dealing with abusive assholes, owing to her experience with Komura. That said, Yuri is still a bit inexperienced in the ways of the city, and still needs a bit of help dealing with some things. She does not like the dark or tight enclosed spaces, and owing to her encounter with the Weaver of Lies, she's developed a mild case of arachnophobia. The events of the Night From Hell, in which Honkukikaori used his Invocation in violation of the Pact to protect Yumi's enemy, Kukibatokubetsu, from Yumi herself, have made Yuri the only person in Roanapur to have been both a mahou shoujo and a maou shoujo. The fact that her beloved sister is only alive right now because of the bastard that hurt her in the first place is a source of bitter regret for Yumi, who regards the circumstances leading up to it as one of her biggest failures and has sworn never to fuck up this badly ever again.
  • Anastasie Dupont: Manageress of La Colonial, a small restaurant that serves a mix of French and Thai cuisine. She runs the place with a firm but fair hand and doesn't suffer fools gladly. This means that she can be somewhat harsh with those who mess up, especially if she considers it a silly mistake to make. That being said she also looks out for her employees and offers good wages, advice and even a cheap place to sleep. Yuri Suenami has made the restaurant her new home following her reunion with Yumi, and Yumi has made the place a more frequent stop in order to check on her every now and then. However, Anastasie is also a bit of a mahou shoujo fangirl (her office is covered in posters and pictures) and wants nothing more than to get pictures with them -- and even better, to find out their secret identities. This aspect of Anastasie annoys Yumi to no end.

PC[edit]

  • Megan: (Friendly) Yumi respects Megan for her skills with the dual 1911s, similar in many ways to those of Sylvia herself. The two of them have fought together on several occasions, and often talk shop when they are at the Church of Violence, Yumi to see Sylvia and Megan to see Sister Magdalena. Yumi owes Megan a great deal for being one of the two mahou shoujo who brought her sister back to her.
  • Riri: (Friendly) Riri saved Yumi's life when she was caught in an ambush by three mahou shoujo working for one of Chang's rivals in Hong Kong, and the two have worked together on several occasions since fighting demons and those they possess. She's by far the youngest of Yumi's associates, and is quite self-reliant for her age, but Yumi still feels a sense of responsibility for her and seeks to help keep her out of trouble when she's around.
  • Noriko: (Professional) Yumi met Noriko during the battle with Zhao Jun, Huy Tran and their men, and fought alongside her against both Shub-Niggurath and Atlach-Nacha. Yumi was the one who suggested the moniker of "Blood Maiden" following the Hell-Mother battle, due to the very creepy power she developed during the battle in question. Noriko is a good girl to have at her side, though Yumi can't help but worry about her sometimes -- the Colombians seem to be after her, as well as a cop who won't leave her alone after a mission from Kitty which had her setting fires all over the city to destroy a demonic tome; and that's not even mentioning the rather unsettling nature of her new power and how she's choosing to use it.
  • Xiahe: (Professional, reciprocated) Yumi and Xiahe are business partners when it comes to demonslaying. Yumi doesn't exactly trust her due to her background in the intelligence community, though she has given her good intel on demons in the past. Yumi prefers to meet face to face with Xiahe when they have to communicate with each other due to Xiahe being deaf, and Yumi has learned enough sign language to make herself understood when lip-reading isn't enough. Yumi's nickname for Xiahe, which also carries over with a different meaning to her mahou shoujo persona of Ghost Flower, is "spook chick". Yumi also has something of a soft spot for Xiahe's relationship with one Ingrid Manheim, and has become the resident "shipper on deck" in regards to the two. Stranger things have happened in Roanapur.
  • Shizuka: (Friendly, reciprocated) Despite their differences in class, Yumi helped Shizuka get accustomed to life in Roanapur, much like Sylvia did for her when she was first starting out following what happened to Yuri. Though her primary prey are demons and those that summon them, she's agreed to help Shizuka track down the assassin that got away -- she knows all too well what it feels like to lose someone you love. The two have saved each other's lives on numerous occasions, and Yumi's feelings toward Shizuka are developing into something more than just a friendship.
