Makoto and Akemi were best friends as long as they could both remember, their families having been neighbors since they were both infants. As a child Akemi would often claim she would marry Makoto when she grew up, and even Makoto's protests at such declarations were mostly out of habit.

As teenagers they drifted apart slightly, as teenagers tend to do, but remained good friends. This was complicated as Akemi took up a mysterious hobby that involved sneaking away at odd hours without a word to anyone.

Concerned and curious in turn about his friend, Makoto eventually decided to go after her and make sure she wasn't in trouble. Surreptitiously following her one night, he saw her carefully entering a deserted construction site in a bizarre costume.

Upon entering the construction site he spotted Akemi engaged in a magical fight with an enormous feline creature. What happened next is open to interpretation; Akemi claims he startled her, though Makoto always privately thought she saw him and tried to show off. Regardless, Akemi miscast a spell and the construction partially collapsed. Akemi was killed and Makoto only survived due to her throwing herself on top of him. A fact that Akemi will never, ever let him forget.

Akemi's spirit now "haunts" Makoto, though there's no particular animosity beyond teasing. Akemi is quick to claim that it's because they're destined to be together, though she demands Makoto uphold her magical girl duties since it's his fault she's dead, which may have more to do with it. And so Makoto has spent the last few years learning as much wind magic as Akemi can teach him, and using it to deal with a succession of supernatural pests and minor evils that menace their hometown. At least he finally managed to convince her he didn't have to wear a skirt.

Makoto has done his best to keep his situation secret, both out of embarassment and in an effort to keep Akemi from being (metaphorically) poked and prodded in some paranormal laboratory. He was surprised to be picked for the Flaazhiear tournament, and hopes that he can continue to keep his true identity secret from the public.

As a ghost, Akemi cannot interact with the physical world, and can't be seen or heard by anyone except Makoto or those with certain supernatural senses. However, she can peek behind walls and evesdrop on conversations before relaying the information to Makoto, a fact that they have made occasional use of.

In life, Akemi was an energetic and playful girl, and she hasn't let being a ghost get her down. Unfortunately her condition makes Makoto the target of all of her tricks and jokes, but he doesn't really mind; he's just happy being able to talk to his friend. Plus having someone telling jokes during Math class keeps things entertaining, as long as he can keep from laughing out loud and earning the ire of his teacher.

Despite a good bit of teasing on both sides, Akemi and Makoto care deeply for one another and will always try to support the other.
