Malazan FATE/Warren Magic

Magic in the Malazan Book of the Fallen, involves tapping power from inside the mage, taking power from spirits, or most commonly using the power of a Warren or Hold. The effects created varies depending on where the magic is taken from, how it is combined, and the intent of the mage. Warrens are oftem themselves complete realms or worlds containing sentient and non-sentient creatures, geography and a ruling creature, usually a god. The power of warrens are theorized to come from dragons, each of whom have an aspect the same as the warren. Most races have a racial Warren that exhibits particular effects or properties; humans generally tap Warrens based on an innate preference, that produce limited or specific effects. Warrens are best described as closed doors in the mage's mind. Accessing the power behind it requires careful, and deliberate opening to unleash and shape the power within. Controlling an open Warren is a draining process, and to open the door too far is to invite madness, physical harm, or death upon the mage. Racial Warrens are Elder, unavailable to humans in most cases, and significantly more powerful, in addition to being immune to the magic-deadening effects of otataral.

To evoke this very specific and colourful style of magic, some major changes have been made to the way magic normally works in Legends of Anglerre, though still using its framework of Trappings and Stunts. There is only one Sorcery Skill (not many Skills each covering a specific form of magic as in LoA), and there are only a few Stunts granting broader access and higher mysteries (no Stunts-per-higher-power as in LoA).

The first thing a character requires to be a talent is a Warren-specific Aspect. You might have "My winds are Thyr". If you have more than one Aspect, you have access to more than one Warren. This allows you to have the Sorcery Skill, which you must raise above Mediocre (+0). Having an Aspect and raising Sorcery to Average (+1) gives you access to all the simple Trappings, both the Universal ones and those specific to your Warren(s). Taking the Cadre Mage Stunt gives you access to the Cadre Mage universal Trappings for your Warren(s).

The High Mage Stunt gives you the most powerful effects within your Warren (and some more universal Trappings), and must be taken once for each Warren you wish to have High access to.

Finally, the Broadened Warren Stunt gives you simple access to the Warren-specific effects of another Warren, but your Sorcery Skill is considered to be one point lower when using these effects. It is a way to get some additional versatility without having to use another Aspect for that Warren.
