Maurice the Not Wild Enough, Wandering Furry Exile

A new child had not been born on the Island of Where for many, many years, and there was great rejoicing among the Wild Things on the day that Maurice came into this world. Happiness soured and became concern, however, as the young Thing grew up - or rather, failed to grow up. Maurice was a sickly, pale, and small child, something unheard of on the Island. The Elders began to considered even the unthinkable - that Maurice was not fit to be a Wild Thing at all. When Maurice came of age, he was set the Wild Tests, the sacred trials of adulthood, as all Things of the Island are. He failed every single one of them - he was too small, too weak, too....tame. This was unprecedented - the Wild Tests, though hard, had always before been considered little more than a formality, for Wild Things are hardy, strong and willful, and there is little they can't achieve if they put their minds to it. Maurice was the first ever to fail all of the Tests, to be declared officially UnWild, in all the passed-down history of the Island. The consequence, of course, was exile. The Elders, however, are not beings of stone and ice, they have love and sympathy in their great furry hearts, and they were unwilling to face the thought that perhaps the time of Wild Things was done, that Maurice was proof that the Island was dying. So they gave him one more chance. He would be exiled, but should he ever prove himself worthy to return, and truly Wild, then he would be welcomed back with open arms. Maurice has been wandering for a year and a day now, searching for a way to prove himself worthy and Wild. He will take on any adventure, face any danger, if he thinks it will lead to him finding his way home.

Maurice is a Wild Thing, a chaotic force to be reckoned with. He's a runt among his own kind, but he towers above the normal creatures of Zo at eight feet tall, and though he is a weak and sickly example of his own kind, by comparison to 'normal' people he is incredibly strong and tough. He has two huge, curved, goat-like horns on his massive head, and sharp claws on his hands and feet. He's covered from head to toe in thick, shaggy fur and has two big, yellow eyes.

Like all Wild Things, Maurice has a gigantic mouth, lined with sharp fangs, and can innately perform Chowmagic - he has the ability to swallow objects and store them safely inside himself for later use. He can even swallow living creatures without harming them, though the experience is not necessarily pleasant for the creature.

Wild Things all know Monsterspeak, and Maurice is no exception. Monsterspeak is the secret language that all monsters know - and, of course, Wild Things are themselves monsters.

The Wild Things, despite their size, are often good at crafting, which they call Makings. They work mostly with wood, and sometimes stone, but have no knowledge of metal or the like. They usually use this talent to make huge huts and forts. Maurice has some knowledge of Makings, but he is rather more adept at carving little wooden figures and objects than he is at putting together dwellings and other large constructions.

Wild Things are at their best when things are chaotic and...well, wild. When things are getting crazy, even Maurice dances to the rhythm of the Wild Rumpus.

Due to a combination of a desperation to prove himself, and the novel feeling of being a big thing in a place full of small things, Maurice is often extremely Reckless, rushing into things impulsively without thinking them through.
