Legacy: The Brides of the Destroyer

The Destroyer had sent a trio of his brides to foment war between the small Kingdom of Najas and the Republic of Ngadu. The Transcendent Sages had been watching the Destroyer's machinations on earth for some time now and decided to intervene to thwart him. The enlightened sage known as Ulluk the Wise in his last mortal incarnation descended to the earth in disguise and met the three brides as they roamed among the people of Najas and Ngadu. He reached out and ripped the veil from their minds, so that they could see through people's bodies to their souls--and recognize many of the souls they encountered as people they had once known and loved, mothers, fathers, siblings, lovers, spouses, friends from previous lives. Stunned, the three brides wandered aimlessly, overwhelmed by their ability to see souls and the karmic bonds uniting people--and able to sense their own negative karma weighting them down. After one rising and setting of the sun, Ulluk's action faded and the veil returned over their eyes. The three brides recovered their wits somewhat--but their obedience to the will of the Destroyer had been shattered. They decided they could not continue to serve him and harm those they had loved in other lifetimes and spoke among themselves about how they might banish him from the earth and return him to the Pit.

The three brides returned to the Destroyer's earthly fortress and told him, "We were thwarted as attempted to work your will. Some higher power intervened and stopped us," which was true as far as it went. They continued, "We are concerned that some god or other entity may try to strike directly at you, banishing you from the earth."

The Destroyer laughed and told them, "No power on earth or in the higher spheres of being can banish me from here, for I have removed my heart from my body and hidden it on the earth. As long as my heart lies hidden on the earth, I cannot be banished from it."

The unfaithful brides asked the Destroyer, "But could some being not stumble upon your heart and do harm to it?"

And the Destroyer said, "No, for I have hidden it in the Cursed Wastes of Jamu, where no mortal can walk without turning to stone."

But the brides of the Destroyer were no longer mortal and the searched the Cursed Wastes of Jamu, each one in turn, so the Destroyer would not suspect anything. After ten years, when one of them found his heart, they carried it down to the Pit with them. Ulluk the Wise had been watching all along and when this happened, he spoke to the many pantheons of gods. The pantheons struck and banished the Destroyer to the Pit, ending his reign on earth. The Destroyer slew his three unfaithful brides and erased their names from history. Their souls, however, were now unbound and they returned to the earth, reborn as mortal men and women. And they were honored as heroines, even with their names unknown.
