I got myself up to my room and into the shower in record time. Dear God in Heaven, what have I done? Three people dead, their blood on my hands. No matter how much I scrubbed, I could still smell that ugly aroma of roasting flesh as the bodies of the unfortunate Edgar and Tab went up in flames. I understood the necessity of it—I’d been charged to keep the Masquerade and could leave no evidence behind. As a cop I’d seen any number of murder-suicides between lovers and there was no plausible scenario that could cover up what had actually taken place. There would be no explaining an exsanguinated body in Edgar’s shower or how Edgar himself ended up in the same shower with a broken neck. So tonight I passed the point of no return and burned two human beings to a crisp. That they were already dead when I set them on fire didn’t matter. The damage had already been done, my damnation already set, and the ruination of my innocence complete.

Praying the hot water would melt the hard black knot of ice inside me, I held myself under the spray until the water ran cold.
