Background

he young Hobbit lad sweeps off his green feathered hat to bow low as he introduces himself. "My name is Tofferr Brandybuck, at your service. That's Tofferr with two Fs and two Rs mind, the proper way of spelling it so that you hold the sound and roll it at the end. I knew a Tofer from Frogmorton who simply dropped his name sharp like at the end, and it sounded like people were coughing when they called out to him."

"He was a Bracegirdle mind, and you may know how they are, so I'm not totally surprised he can't spell his own name. In any case I'm from a bit of all over. My father was a Brandybuck by the name of Gaorold, and my mother was a Greenhand of all things, name of Corinne. Well my father was a member of the militia, and that didn't sit too well with my mother - honestly living so close to the wood and the big folk in general didn't sit too well with her. She thought it all very odd, and not at all proper, especially not for raising young Hobbits."

"So my mother, she convinces my father to move west across the Brandywine to settle on a farm in the Marish in the Eastfarthing. Still close enough to follow the Master, but not close as to be dangerous. Or so she said. My father took to farming life okay, but he's still a Brandybuck in his heart and that means he's always wary, especially after my sister - her name is Embry by the way - was born. He used to keep the family sword, bow, and armor in a big trunk in his bedroom, right next to his bed. Drove my mother a little batty I think, but he was insistent on it. As for me, my mother tried to teach me to be a farmer, and I admit I do enjoy a good meal - and I'm not half bad at cooking if I do say so myself. Can I interest you in some stew? It should be just about done."

"But anyway, like my father I'm a Brandybuck, and that means staying always watchful. Who knows what could be out there! And I've been feeling it. There's a shadow closing in even around the Shire, but the common folk don't seem to care one bit! I felt I had to do something, so I joined the Shirriffs as soon as I was old enough. But even the Shirriffs and the Bounders didn't want to hear anything about trouble. 'We're to keep the peace and QUIET' I was told. 'Trouble makes one late for Dinner' they said. Well bugger the whole lot of them. I know we can't just ignore the wide world, and when I heard the stories of Mad Baggins up on Bag End and how he single-handedly fought a dragon and saved Wilderland... well I knew then a Hobbit can make a difference, so I packed my things, and told my parents I was going out to stop the evil in the world even if I had to walk right up to it's front door and use the knocker! And now I'm here looking for just such a door."
