Oh yes, in the future, almost everyone will be a zombie. We already have the secret to immortality, you see; once we find a way to retain the spirit and prevent putrefaction, we'll have the beginnings of a post-mortal revolution.

Background[edit]

The amurine, or rat folk, are a species of small, short-lived humanoid rodents who tend to inhabit the slums of large cities throughout the world. It was in the nation of Ctaris- one of the few places in the world where the rat folk could hope to gain wealth and prestige- that they earned a reputation as masters of Necromancy. That ended several years ago, however, when a cadre of amurine mages attempted to assemble, in secret, an undead force to rival the armies of Queen Melanchthon. The Queen responded by ordering the entire amurine necromantic community, and most of their clans, expelled from the country.

At the time, Tavaxi was an Occult Philosopher in the Ctarian capitol, who wrote on the promise of Necromancy as a means to defeat death. Though he'd long been ostracized by rat folk society for failing to produce children (having never been attracted to the opposite gender), his life was settled and comfortable. When the day came that he was forced from his home at musketpoint, however, he found that he had no clan to fall back on. With nowhere else to turn, Tavaxi made a place for himself in the unfamiliar society of humans, plying the rare trade of a Necromancer for Imperial clients.

At twenty-seven, old age is rapidly approaching. Still, he's found himself oddly optimistic; immortality- either of the physical or metaphorical variety- somehow still seems just around the corner.

Benny The Skeleton[edit]

Tavaxi found the corpse of what he assumed to be human bandit in a ditch several years ago, and turned it into a zombie. He named it Benny, after a legendary human thief who preyed on Rat Folk, and has been upgrading it for years. Currently, it's a cleanly polished skeleton, with intricate carved runes and inlaid copper wiring- quite well-made as zombies go. The corpse retained a lot of muscle memory related to sword fighting, which Tavaxi has been able to tap into- with a suit of armor and a sword, it makes an excellent bodyguard.
