Leviathan: the Tempest Lexicon

Atoll : A human being who is naturally immune to the Wake. Atolls exert a powerful fascination on Leviathans.

Bahamut : One of the Progenitors of the Wicked Tribe. Bahamut was legendary for its size, its usual tranquility, and its fury when roused.

Bahamutans : The Strain of Leviathans descended from Bahamut.

Beloved : A human whom the Wake has convinced to serve and worship a Leviathan. Beloved often form Cults to serve their masters.

Birthright : A low-level power associated with a Vestige. Can be used in any form.

Channel : A particular power within a Vestige. A Channel increases in power as the Leviathan transforms into forms with greater Depth. Channels can be Ancestral or Descendent : Descendent channels grow from Ancestral channels.

Cult : A gathering of humans permanently influence by the Wake, who worship and serve a Leviathan, whether he wants it or not.

Dagon : One of the Progenitors of the Wicked Tribe. Dagon could impose his will on whoever he wished and maintained control over vast swathes of the mortal population.

Dagonites : The Strain of Leviathans descended from Dagon.

Depth : A particular level of transformation which a Leviathan can attain. The greater the Depth, the most monstrous and least human the Leviathan is.

Doldrums : Areas within the Rift that are somehow shielded from the Tempest.

Hybrid : The child of a Leviathan that exhibits mutations but is unable to change shape. Particularly cultivated Hybirds are called Lahmasu and are sometimes reared to provide aid and assistance to a Leviathan.

Nu : One of the Progenitors of the Wicked Tribe. Nu was a primordial entity deeply connected to the fertile waters, and he never kept a solid physical shape. Alternately, the name also refers to the Strain of Leviathans descended from Nu.

Oceanos : One of the Progenitors of the Wicked Tribe. Oceanos was a commanding patriarch possessed of terrible beauty and reveled in the worship of mortals.

Oceanids : The Strain of Leviathans descended from Oceanos.

Outburst : an involuntary and painful transformation into a greater Depth.

Primordial Seas : The state of perfect harmony and balance which existed before the Tempest arose. Now lost, but remains a goal for many Leviathans.

Progenitor : Mythical creatures of immense power, said to have given birth to modern Leviathans. Progenitors are said to have ruled over all living beings in the time before the Tempest rose.

Rift (The) : A mental and metaphysical reality that Leviathans can access through various means. The Rift reflects the collective unconscious of all living and dead Leviathans, and gets progressively more alien the deeper one goes. The Primordial Seas supposedly lie at the deepest of the Rift.

School : A body of teachings, as well as the group of Leviathans who follow these teachings. Schools provide defined approaches to the centres of interest of Leviathans: ancient history, relationship with mortals, moral behaviour, etc.

School of the Abyss : One of the major Schools for Leviathans. The School of the Abyss encourages Leviathans to withdraw from the world and find answers in the Rift.

School of Clay : One of the major Schools for Leviathans. The School of Clay focuses on understanding of human culture, society and technology to integrate in the modern world.

School of Fog : One of the major Schools for Leviathans. The School of Fog tries to understand how Leviathans and their powers function, to recreate the world before the Tempest.

School of the Reef : One of the major Schools for Leviathans. The School of the Reef holds that the mortals and leviathans alike require constant protection against dangers, and agressively seek out threats to eliminate.

School of the Sun : One of the major Schools for Leviathans. The School of the Sun encourages Leviathans to build a religious relationship with the world and with mortals.

Shallows : Areas of our world that are closer to the Rift. Known for disappearances and hallucinations.

Shore (The) : Sometimes used to refer to our world, as opposed to the Rift.

Strains : Lineages of Leviathans descended from a common ancestor Progenitor. Strains share some characteristics, and a given family line with Leviathan blood usually belongs to one given Strain.

Tanin : One of the Progenitors of the Wicked Tribe. Tanin was a tremendously dangerous force, armed and armored with little to no empathy for whoever crossed its path.

Taninim : The Strain of Leviathans descended from Tanin.

Tiamat : The mythical ancestor for all Leviathans. Possibly a personification of a primordial life-force.

Tempest : The spiritual and ecological imbalance that gave birth to the modern world. Said to have been caused when Marduk slew Tiamat. The Tempest is also used as an all-encompassing term for all the difficulties Leviathans face when trying to assert their Tranquility.

Tranquility : The state of calm, balance and connection with their inner nature that is regarded as a goal by most Leviathans.

Vestige : A particular set of powers that Leviathan can manifest, recalled from the vast abilities that Progenitors possessed.

Wake (The) : The psychic field around Leviathans that subconsciously tells mortals to submit, get out of the way, or cower in fear. People who are subject to the Wake for too long or too often can become Beloved and form a Cult.

Wicked Tribe (The) : Another name for Leviathans.
