Quotes[edit]

Benedict – Since he killed something that was posing as someone who wanted him to kill the something that was posing as himself, I don’t think he’ll be quite the menace to public safety that waking people up at this ungodly hour would require.

Flora – I don’t want to call attention to it, but the poor girl is glistening like a pig.

Flora – I want to make sure the blood gets back to my head. It’s rushed to so many places.

Julian – If I could fake sincerity, I would express my gratitude for the opportunity to meet you all. Clark – If I could fake sadness, I would say I’m sorry to see you go.

Ken – No one’s been condescended to by Gerard yet! Bobby –That’s not true.

Jim (mimicking Gerard) – I’m so cut I need a bandaid!

The Adventure[edit]

Calypso returns to amber and joins the sleep-over. An alarm goes up in the wee hours. Reynaldo the Assassin has escaped and taken a hostage (La Rubio). Llewella tells the girls that he has probably gone to Kashfa as that’s where he would feel strongest. She suggests sleeping for awhile and then going to talk Reynaldo into coming back for judgment.

Cyrus wants to get together an expedition to go after La Rubio, but he doesn’t know where Kashfa is. The servants tell him that there are maps in the library. He goes there and finds some maps. He determines it will take 8-10 hours on horseback. He tries to find Clark but Clark is a heavy sleeper. Cyrus tries to find the other newbies that came into Amber when he did. He determines all the ladies are in Llewella’s room. Benedict finally tracks him down. Cyrus asks what is being done to find LaRubio. Benedict says that Cyrus has been in Amber a day, but he has been there for thousands of years. The situation has been handled.

Cyrus agrees to stand down. Benedict tells him he is welcome to go when he goes to retrieve LaRubio if he agrees to behave. They will go tomorrow, as it will give them a chance to get to know each other as brothers. Cyrus agrees as he wants to observe Benedict’s leadership style. He returns to the library.

In Llewella’s quarters, servants arrive with clothes and announce the brunch is being served. Evelyn wants to know if the King will be there, as she has something for him.

In Kashfa, Reynaldo asks only that LaRubio give him until tomorrow to ready his troops. LaRubio asks why he hasn’t considered improving his land (which is a dessert). LaRubio says the letter he received asked him to prove Reynaldo’s innocence. The handwriting is Fiona’s. Reynaldo admits to killing Caine. LaRubio says he’s not had good relations with Fi, as she kidnapped him and the Baron. Reynaldo says that they want to get rid of him as he’s in the Elder’s way. Reynaldo suggests they could find a shapeshifter to impersonate Caine. LaRubio asks if it is possible for him to return to Amber so he can work on proving his innocence. Reynaldo says he will have LaRubio escorted to the edge of Arden, but from there he’s on his own. LaRubio confesses he’s a shapeshifter and changes into a dragon.

Calypso asks for workout clothes and a fruit smoothie. When she’s told that Deirdre worked out in PJ’s, she asks for scissors. Evelyn puts the crown on her head, picks up the sword, and heads down the hall asking for the King. She is taken to his office where she makes and appointment to see him in an hour. In the meantime, she heads off to brunch, as does Gwenyth. Cyrus goes as well. The only elder there is Flora. She asks Cyrus if he wants a black armband, in mourning for LaRubio. Evelyn arrives, dragging the sword and the crown falling down over her face. Cyrus asks Flora if he’s close to Fiona, and she says not particularly. She laments that Bleys is devilishly handsome and they are so closely related. She gives Cyrus a grenade and tells him to hide it and throw it at the person who most annoys him. She suggests that everyone meet Bleys and learn to be like him.

Calypso goes to the exercise room, which is a sand pit, some dummies, and some weapons.

Clark rises early and goes jogging. He cleans up and goes to brunch. His mother is dressed in full mourning and talking to Cyrus. He learns the Reynaldo has kidnapped LaRubio, and LaRubio is presumed dead. The servants bring Calypso some lumpy fruit and “cultured milk solids”. Calypso asks if they don’t have a blender, so the servant rolls on the fruit instead. They also bring her another pair of PJ’s when she asks for a running suit.

Clark asks what happened to LaRubio. Flora says LaRubio went to visit his brother and was kidnapped. If Benedict hasn’t bothered to try to find him by this point, he’s probably dead. Flora talks about Caine’s death, Deirdre and Brand’s deaths, and the abyss. Cyrus gets a warm feeling in his pocket.

LaRubio flies over Arden. He flies above the arrows being shot at him.

Cyrus’s baseball card asks if he should try to kill the shapeshifter flying over or just maim it. Cyrus thinks it may be LaRubio, and says not to kill it. Julian says he will give a lesson in decorum to this LaRubio and will return him. He also says this is #1.

Calypso asks for a roster of everyone here. Cyrus says he has a bunch of baseball cards. The cousins discuss their ideas about what is going on. LaRubio arrives, no worse for wear. Flora faints, and LaRubio lifts her back into her chair.

LaRubio has evidence that Reynaldo is innocent. The evidence will be revealed in time.

There are discussions about dimensions and bacon. There is also a cat fight between Calypso and Flora. Calypso stomps off to the gym to beat up on dummies. Clark follows her. Flora leaves. LaRubio stands and pays deference as she does, and Gwenyth follows her. Evelyn goes to see the King. Cyrus goes to the gym as well. Shortly, Evelyn shows up with a swordmaster and a wooden sword. They begin lessons. She says she gave the sword to the King, and in return he will requisition her anything he wants.

LaRubio goes to the Rose Garden where Fiona is. He pours her tea. She says that they may have gotten off to a bad start. She feels some obligation to him and his brother. She says he wants Baron Sancha. She wants proof that Reynaldo didn’t kill Caine. She offers him a deal. She will exchange the Baron for Caine’s daughter. She tells him to go through the portal at the lighthouse with Caine’s daughter and he will return with the Baron. She just wants to interview Gwenyth. She gives him a vial and instructs him to add two drops to her water. Fiona says it is Aqua Vitae, and Gwenyth knows of it. If she has some, she will be much more willing to go with him. Fiona then excuses herself.

Gwenyth goes to find Cyrus. LaRubio finds Gwenyth. The servants arrive with the dog that was requested, followed by Julian. He asks LaRubio if he changed into a dragon and flew across the forest. LaRubio says he did, and Julian challenges him. Clark will be LaRubio’s second and Cyrus will be Julian’s. Julian and Evelyn are formally introduced. Julian declares Calypso to be his second instead. He says that Evelyn should go his lodge, and when she learns deportment they will find some gentleman to foist her off on. Clark request permission to visit Arden, but Julian doesn’t give it.

Evelyn asks a servant to tell the king that she can’t go to the beach with him. She goes to the stables, but learns that Julian has already left, and she should prepare to go tomorrow.

Evelyn goes to the Texorami with Random and Vialle.

Calypso and Llewella are riding. Gwenyth trumps Llewella and comes through with an unconscious Reynaldo.

Clark does some research in the library. He then requests an audience with Benedict. A servant brings him a card, Clark concentrates, and Benedict brings him through. Clark tells him of his research, and Benedict gives him 48 hours to study firearms there. He asks who to talk with about the “magical transport” (trumps). Benedict says that all of the newcomers should sit for Bleys to have trumps made.

LaRubio tries to find out about Julian’s fighting abilities. He also learns that Caine uses questionable means to accomplish questionable goals for the good of Amber.

Gwenyth returns Cyrus’s card to him. She then finds LaRubio.

LaRubio goes to see Gerard. Gerard says he can whip up a potion to help LaRubio beat Julian. He warns LaRubio against not fighting back against Julian.

Calypso wants to go to the beach. Llewella says they can go tomorrow, but Calypso tells her that she has to be Julian’s second. They discuss the coming duel.

Cyrus tours the landmarks of Amber. Clark determines that jewelers’ rouge is explosive here. Gwenyth talks to Llewella.

In the morning, a hunter’s breakfast laid out. LaRubio gets the potion from Gerard. The combatants go to the courtyard. Julian swings but his sword bounces back. LaRubio strikes and Julian drops his sword. Julian concedes, and prepares to take Evelyn to Arden. Julian asks Evelyn is she’s ready to go, but she’s badly sunburned from her trip to the beach. Julian tells Cyrus to have someone make a trump of Evelyn and send it to him.
