The Adventure[edit]

Calypso is sparring. The gym is crowded with camerapeople. A tall blonde enters and goes to the edge of the ring. Calypso’s opponent drops to his knees. The blonde waves her hands and everyone freezes. She says she’s Calypso’s aunt Florimel. She also says that there’s a dinner party in Calypso’s honor. She tells Calypso to “de-glisten” and take her hand. They step through to a courtyard. The aunt welcomes Calypso to Amber. She is taken to a room where a bath has been drawn.

La Rubio finishes writing his Final Testament and rides out on his finest charger. He heads to the south for a final confrontation with the Ambrosios, his hated enemy and despoiler of the lands. He rides for days and comes to a large, party-colored tent with a sign proclaiming “Fortunes Told”. Music plays inside. He bids the foul cowards to come out. An elderly man comes to the edge of the tent and tells him he must come in. He enters and sees girls doing the Dance of the Seven Veils. He goes into a different room where an old woman looks into a crystal ball. She bids him drink the tea so she can read the leaves. He does, and passes out.

Clark is in his lab, studying. He hears a scream from 30 floors above. On the 28th floor, the elevator jerks to a stop. It then begins inching upward. He sees feet on the 30th floor he sees large, medievally-dressed man. He is hand-over-hand pulling the elevator up. He asks Clark if he’s ready to come home. Clark introduces himself and the man says that’s not really his name. The man’s introduces himself as Gerard. He startled Clark’s sister when he appeared in her bedroom, so that’s why she screamed. Gerard says Clark’s real name is Clarence and his other is Florimel. Gerard throws Clark over his shoulder in a fireman’s carry and they go to check on his sister. They then startle his shadow mother faints when she sees them. Gerard picks Pat (Clark’s sister) up as well and asks where a mirror is. They walk through into the Courtyard in Amber. Gerard tells him that there is going to be a dinner in his honor that evening. Valets show Clark and Pat to their rooms.

Evelyn’s speaker box tells her to turn and address the video wall. She is to report to adulthood indoctrination center 7. She arrives and gets into line. When she’s next in line, the videowall shifts to show a woman with dark hair and strange clothes. Evelyn is instructed to go to Room 4. She goes, and sees a couple of officials trussed up on the floor. A man introduces himself as her Uncle Corwin, and tells her go through the door. She finds herself in the Amber Courtyard, where Clark is. A servant asks her if she’s a Princess. Clark says that means she outranks him, but the servant corrects him, telling him that he’s a Prince.

Cyrus is in his log cabin and pulls out his inspirational baseball card. The card tells him it’s time for dinner. The card says his mom would have come for him personally. The card says it will let him into the forest, but he will need to stay with his hunting party. Cyrus hears the Nazi choppers. “Babe Ruth” extends his hand and Cyrus is pulled through. “Babe” says he is Julian, they are in Arden, he will leave Arden and neyer return again. Cyrus mounts a horse. They come to the edge of the forest and he sees a city and a huge castle. Julian tells him to dismount, go to the castle, and introduce himself as Deidre’s son. He also says to tell Evelyn “hi”. He does, and tells his story to the guards.

Gwenyth is teaching a meditation class. She leaves tired but satisfied. Alarms bells ring. Dessert people are swarming in from the hills. Gwenyth helps mount the defenses. There is a strange man on top of the hill who yells that his name is Cainus of the Dessert and he wants Gwenyth turned over to him to be his bride. The locals are not having much success, so Gwenyth goes to meet the strange man. He says his name is Caine, he’s her father, and he was almost assassinated “back home”. He will send her there but she can’t tell anyone he’s still alive. He gives her a card and a pirate pendant which begins talking to her about Amber. She looks at the cards and finds herself in the courtyard.

La Rubio wakes up and goes to the courtyard where he finds the others. Everyone is very confused, trying to figure out what is happening. A servant requests that all be shown to their rooms to prepare for dinner, where everything will be explained to them.

La Rubio wants to be taken to the King. He sees the little red-headed woman who poisoned him. She says she did not poison him, her name if Fiona and she is the greatest sorceress in Amber.

She tells him to go back to his room to prepare for dinner. He asks why she feels the need for mockery. She says that some might think it improper to transfer her anger at her youngest brother to his progeny. She tells him that all will be explained at dinner. His valet suggests that La Rubio do as she asks. He leaves, and then asks the valet where the stables are. The valet objects, but La Rubio persuades him.

La Rubio runs down the hall, preparing to jump out of the window. He hears a voice call “Stop!” A walking stick is thrown at him and La Rubio trips over it. Benedict says this is a family matter and the servants scurry away. La Rubio pulls his sword but finds another sword at his throat. He is told that he will have dinner, and that Benedict will return him to his shadow after dinner. But he will not assault the servants in the castle.

Cyrus polishes his captain’s bars and boots, planning not to wear the clothes provided. The valet implores him to wear the tux. He refuses, and they try to get him to wear a clean shirt. He refuses, insisting he wants a U.S. issued shirt (a woman conjurers him from clay). Clark has replicas made of his medals Evelyn wonders how she is supposed to wear her sweater over her Elizabethan dress. She thinks that heating all that water for her bath is wasteful. Gwenyth wonders what her dress actually is, and decides to bathe herself.

Everyone is announced (Clark is first introduced as Clarence). Evelyn keeps up her fish imitation. La Rubio is introduced as Benedict’s aide de camp. Eventually they announce the King and Queen. Dinner lasts 2 ½ hours. Random dismisses everyone who is not family. Random gives a disjointed speech.

Finally, the speech is over. Llewella explains things to Calypso and invites her to Rebma tomorrow. Bleys introduces himself to Gwenyth and asks for the first dance. La Rubio talks with Benedict. Fiona approaches Cyrus and tells him that he has the honor of dancing with her first. While dancing, they discuss Random’s speech. She tells Cyrus that is the sole child of one of Oberon’s children and is eligible to claim his mother’s titles. She suggests he go to Bleys for advice on this. They plan for Cyrus and Bleys to meet after breakfast for Bleys to explain the ways of the Court.

Clark dances with Pat. She says she will stay with him in Amber. He then asks Flora to dance. She suggests that he pass himself off as a domesticated son of Dalt. He asks her about the unicorn. He keeps an eye on the Chaosian ambassador.

Evelyn goes to talk to the ambassador. They go out on the balcony, he grows butterfly wings, and the two of them fly away. They land on a glowing staircase leading to a castle in the sky. La Rubio jumps off the balcony and changes into a dragon on the way down. He flies back and Clark, Calypso, Cyrus and Gwenyth hop on his back. There are clouds moving toward the moon.

In Tir, the ambassador pulls a dagger. He stares at a guard who begin sto disrobe as he heads toward the Throne Room. The ambassador stabs him and then rips open the body and removes the heart. He then asks Evelyn to kiss his hand. She does, and he rubs his hand on the heart. He tells her that they are going to bring a version of her grandfather to life.

The dragon lands, and everyone dismounts. The dragon changes back to La Rubio. All of the dream people in the city seem to be looking at the castle. One person tells La Rubio that the King has returned. Clark takes one of the guard’s swords.

Smoke rises off the heart. A ghostly form materializes and says he’s Oberon. The ambassador tells the form that his granddaughter needs his sword. Evelyn says she also needs his hat. Oberon hands her his sword and crown, which become solid. The form vanishes just as the others arrive. The ambassador introduces himself as Lord Yrral. He says it’s really his sword and crown that he produced magically. He wants the sword back, but she wants to keep it. She says she’ll give it to him in the morning, but he says he needs it now. He must return to Chaos, as the Olympics are on and he’s missing them. Calypso wants to go with him to watch, too. She does, and finds herself in a prison cell.

The others return to Amber. They meet Benedict who examines the sword. He proclaims it to be a Pattern Sword. He suggests they all return to their rooms and hide under their beds. He says he’s going to get Calypso back. Clark, Cyrus and Benedict ride on dragon-La Rubio to Chaos. Benedict requests an audience with Merlin. They meet, and Benedict offers the sword for Calypso’s return. Merlin asks if Calypso is proven to be of the blood. Clark says that Llewella claims her. Merlin says he should talk to his mother, but he doesn’t think she should get a Pattern Sword. Merlin places his hand on Clark’s head and gains some of Clark’s memories of Calypso. Merlin then leaves to draw a trump of her. As they wait, Benedict requests that someone who can turn themselves into a coffee table be brought in to entertain Clark. Merlin completes the card and he, Clark, Cyrus and La Rubio contact Calypso via trump. They bring her through, and Merlin gives Calypso his trump. There is a pounding on the door, and they leave. Explosive noises come from the Throne Room.

Llewella takes Evelyn and Gwenyth under her wing and keeps the others away from them. They decide to have a sleep-over in Llewella’s room, complete with s’mores.
