The Adventure[edit]

At the start of the session:

  • Clark’s future wife and his mother are arguing over wedding (and post-wedding) plans. Realizing that he faced an impossible situation if he intervened, Clark instead wisely chose to go for a ride (as mentioned in the quotes)
  • Cyrus is in a comfortable room, supposedly in a lighthouse.
  • Calypso wants to go under the sea. Things are always better under the sea.
  • Evelyn has confused the King and has returned to her room to pursue her own plans.
  • Gwenyth is back in Amber but not in a good mood.
  • Rubio is missing. There are rumors that he was involved with the explosion at the Chaosian embassy, or that he was kidnapped, or perhaps had accepted a new tutor, or perhaps all of the above.

Capypso travels to her realm. Things are getting better under the sea, but there is also some new discord. The upper class are unhappy because the lower classes no longer eat clams. (Previously the lower classes ate only clams.) Calypso instead creates a scheme to "brand" her style of dressing and create a new class identification structure based on style (and cost of clothing.)

Evelyn is in her room, not falling asleep. She is then on a horse riding toward the shore where there’s a lighthouse. If she looks at it askance, she sees warnings, but if she concentrates she can see Cyrus sitting at a desk. She calls to him. He answers her. She asks if he wants to leave and he says he does. He tells her he’s in protective custody. She tells him to imagine a door, and a door appears. He begins to go through, but Evelyn sees a blade ready to drop on him. Cyrus springs the trap and climbs out. Evelyn calls for another horse. The closer they get to the castle, the more the side of Kolvir looks like steps. They take the steps up. There is a place for the horses, and they see step stones leading to a door. They go through the door and see the Yellow King sitting in a chair. He says the Eater of Dreams is one of his pets. Evelyn asks for him to send them to where Gwenyth is. A door appears and they go through. The door tilts them out toward the castle courtyard. Evelyn asks Cyrus is they want parachutes and they drift downward, with the castle archers’ taking potshots.

Cyrus wakes wrapped in parachute fabric with Evelyn in his arms. He wakes Evelyn. She flies about 20 ft across the courtyard, and then chastises him for waking a sleepwalker. Evelyn tells the guards to take them to Gwenyth’s rooms.

When Clark returns, he sees guards stabbing parachutes in the courtyard. He takes the horse to the stables. A guard tells him Flora’s been looking for him.

Cyrus, Evelyn and Gwenyth talk about deposing the Elemental Rulers to keep from being the Elders’ pawns.

Clark and his fiancée talk. She says Merlin will not be King in Chaos for long. She tells him that LaRubio has gone to take the Logrus.

Gwenyth goes to Kashfa, meets with Caine’s and Julian’s chief of staff in a pocket shadow of her own making. After a few weeks, shadow-time (one day in Amber) she can control them.

Calypso goes for a swim. The water is clearer than it used to be – more like her home. Spontaneous applause breaks out when she gets out. She goes to the castle and asks after Gerard. They lead her to the infirmary. She and Gerard introduce themselves. She asks if he can help her with an exercise routine. He says she needs to change her diet. He says they need to go to his shadow for two weeks, and he’ll make her into a competitor. He tosses her across his shoulder and they disappear.

Everyone gets a momentary trump call from the Red King. He’s in a dragon’s mouth. The contact breaks.

Calypso falls off the log roll and fall to the bottom of the pool. Evelyn contacts her while she’s unconscious. Gerard jumps in after her.

Evelyn and Cyrus trump Gwenyth. She joins them and they then trump LaRubio.

The undercity dwellers are bowing to LaRubio. He says that he is now their king. They are afraid they will all die out. LaRubio assures them they won’t, and that they will no longer be kidnapping children.

Evelyn, Cyrus and Gwenyth trump LaRubio and go through. LaRubio says he had help killing the Red King, and introduces Sancha. They discuss their plans to eliminate the rulers of Fire and Air. LaRubio tries to give his sword earth powers, but the sword bursts into flames and disappears. Evelyn recalls that she too has a sword.

Cyrus gets a trump call but he ignores it. A few seconds later, he’s in contact with Fiona. She suggests that she and his cousins come to an agreement about their goals. Fi tells him to get as many potential cannon fodder as possible (his cousins) and meet her at the base of Tir tonight. She says that there are two choices – assist her or die.

Evelyn trumps Random. He warns her to wear sunscreen. She asks for her sword, and for it to be very cloudy in amber. She says Fiona is planning to take over the Kingdom of Air, and to kill them. He says just to let her do it, but Evelyn wants Air. He asks why she can be earth, and she says LaRubio is dirt.

Random gives Evelyn a trump. It looks like an older version of Cyrus. It’s Corwin, and she’s to tell him to go to Amber and make it cloudy. She leaves and then trumps Corwin’ who’s flying a plane. In exchange for his help, he wants her to get the rug from Brand’s room and take it to his room. After debating (and involving Random) they get the sword and depart (after Corwin trashes the computer and kicks some people around because he doesn’t like the way they looked at Evelyn).

Evelyn goes to Brand’s room, avoiding Fiona. There is a tingle when she touches the door knob. She’s hit with a lightning bolt when she opens the door, but she does see the rug.

The door to the room slams, and the room fills with a sweet smelling gas. She passes out and goes to Tir. Chinese servants with lanterns and a sedan chair arrive. The Yellow King steps out and thanks her for returning his sword and rug. He says he will need them to defeat Fiona this evening. He asks for a quart of her blood. She refuses and he orders his guards to seize her. They manage to get a couple of ounces before she can get away.

Clark sees Evelyn running downward through the air to the castle. She asks if he wants in on the cousins’ plans.

Corwin approaches. Evelyn tells him about losing the rug, and he chastises her. Clark tries to be logical but has little luck at it. Evelyn tries to lead Corwin up the steps, but his foot goes through. Clark closes his eyes and tries it, and his foot lands on the step. They all join hands and Clark and Corwin close their eyes. They go up. They open their eyes. It’s OK as long as they hold her hand. Corwin wants to go to the Yellow King. Evelyn calls for him. Corwin says there’s something happening to the Pattern up here. The Yellow King’s guards attack. Corwin dispatches them with a Pattern Lens. The Yellow King is mixing up a potion in a cauldron and is about to push it over on the Pattern. Corwin swoops Evelyn up under his arm and advances on the King. Clark begins falling, but casts a spell to fly away. The Yellow King disappears. The rug is a mess, and Corwin says he will not be the one to clean it. Corwin invites the cousins to his end of reality to be safe. Corwin casts a Pattern Lens below Clark, and he is returned to Evelyn and Corwin. Corwin asks who the others are that Fiona is going to kill.

Cyrus’s trump deck starts to get really warm. A Pattern Lens pops out, and smacks him. Cyrus disappears, and the Lens shoots toward LaRubio. It sucks him into the people-chain. It gets Gwenyth next, and then goes after Calypso, leaving Gerard thinking he’s crushed her in a strength-building machine.

They are in an ultra-modern apartment in 23rd century Paris. Corwin gives them each an unlimited platinum card and gives Evelyn the rug.

Evelyn and Calypso decide they need to walk Corwin’s Pattern. Calypso tries to trump Gerard and gets a faint contact. Clark joins in and Calypso tells him she’s not dead, but he’s drunk. LaRubio reveals he is actually a member of the Hendrake clan of Chaos. There is debate and Calypso decides to go home. She arrives in the Realm of Water and is immediately trumped by Fiona. She says to tell Evelyn that she has a gift, and holds up the Yellow King’s head. Fi says Evelyn can come and take over her realm now. Fiona puts the head in a hat box and gives it to Calypso. Fiona says that the cousins have decided that things needed to be changed and that we need to be knocked on our backs and learn our place. (We can be decorative.) Calypso goes to see Llewella and tells her about the head. Llewella says that she thinks Fi just wants the cousins all to be afraid of her. They talk about the different realms and Calypso asks about a realm of spirit. She asks Llewella about the pets of Water or Fire. Calypso asks to have the head delivered to Evelyn, from Fiona, with love, while she goes back to her realm.

LaRubio returns to the realm of earth. It is under attack and the “pretty” ones are dying. The Seducer is the one attacking. LaRubio flies around until he finds Bleys’ camp. He changes to human form and attacks the guards. Bleys comes out. LaRubio tells him that he has already killed the Crimson King, and now rules. Bleys dismisses his troops and asks for permission to visit LaRubio’s capitol. LaRubio gives his permission.

In Corwin’s realm, Evelyn’s dream powers don’t work.

Clark trumps Corwin. He’s in Random’s office. He had forgotten about us. Everyone except Cyrus goes back to Amber. Corwin says he has to leave and announces that Gwenyth is acting regent. She then gets a call from Caine thanking her for handling things in Kashfa. Clark goes through Random’s desk. All of the troops in Kashfa have gone non-violent, and Caine sent in new troops in to take over and are making inroads into Arden. Gwenyth orders Amber troops to help defend Arden. Benedict arrives and says that he approves of Gwenyth being regent. Benedict requests permission to handle the situation between Caine and Julian. He also says there is an arrest order, issued by Bleys, for libeling Fiona. Gwenyth says that there is no evidence that either side said anything worth anyone being arrested, and rescinds the order.

Clark goes to talk to Fiona. He says that he has not meant to offend her, and she says he hasn’t. She says that most of the problem seems to be with the women of his generation. She also says that he’s reasonable, and that he and Cyrus are such a comfort to her. Clark confesses that he would be interested in the throne of fire. He gives her his red rock, and she says she’ll inform him when his throne is ready.

Cyrus is hanging out at his apartment. He gets a phone call. It’s Merlin. He asks if Cyrus would like to walk the Pattern. Cyrus says yes, and he does.

Evelyn finds a hat box in her room. She opens the box and screams. Clark hears her and comes to the room. He says Fiona told him that she arranged for her to have the Throne of Air. Evelyn goes to sleep holding the box. Clark goes to the library.

The next morning, the TV turns on in Cyrus’s apartment. Corwin is calling out everyone to fight the Nazis. Cyrus joins the air force, and France clobbers the Nazis.

Clark talks with Calypso. He tells her about Cyrus, Gwenyth and Evelyn. They talk about how fire and water don’t mix.

Bleys returns, as does Gerard (who still thinks Calypso is dead). Gwenyth sees him throwing black flowers around and tries to tell him Calypso’s alive. He doesn’t believe her, so she sends a note to Calypso that she needs to talk to Gerard soon.

Everyone gets an envelope draped in black velvet announcing Clark’s wedding. Flora trumps LaRubio and asks him to organize a bachelor party for Clark.

Calypso and Gwenyth talk about the possibility of a spirit world.

Clark talks to Flora. They discuss the need (or lack thereof) for his bride once the baby is born.

Evelyn makes it to the dream world. Calypso goes to check on the squid.

At the bachelor party, Benedict is almost light-hearted. A good time is had by all.
