After the Reign of Vampires

Humanity existed, thrived, and then screwed everything up. Global warming, disease pandemics, and finally nuclear war. At the end of human civilization the vampires who had hidden behind the scenes for thousands of years rose up and decided they were better off in charge. Thus began the reign of the vampires who ruled for thousands of years, built gleaming cities, made contact with strange beings in other dimensions to grant themselves magical powers, created strange monsters and servants, and mutated humans into the different races that we have today. As time went on the vampires became increasingly remote from humanity, drawn into esoteric obsessions and feuds. Eventually they went to war with each other and, for the most part, destroyed each other as humanity once had.

Now humanity and the offshoot races have inherited the world. Villages, towns, and even cities are fortresses against the monsters of the night. Half remembered technology, the scraped together magic, and appeals to the powerful beings in other dimensions allow people to survive, and at times thrive, in this new world.

Inspired by Miserable Secrets, Vampire Hunter D, Jack Vance, Tekumel, and the Witcher. It takes place in the distant future after the world has been reshaped by multiple wars and reality bending projects. This means it will have the standard D&D monsters as well as robots, electricity, and possible aliens. Basically if we think it would be cool to have in the setting it will be there. At the same time I want to keep it feeling more swords and sorcery then gonzo.

Your characters are a wandering group of monster hunters/problem solvers. Characters will belong to the Guild of Monster Hunters which gives you official sanction for wandering around, carrying weapons, and prying into dark caves. Play will be mostly episodic. I’ll be using some random generators such as the Miserable Secrets town generator to create a town and a problem for you to solve. There will be some investigation and social components as well as combat. Combat will be dangerous, I want to keep the possibility of PC death when appropriate.
