Background[edit]

Although Askul's clan affiliations would obviously mark him as a rebel material, in his heart he is a Pavisite. It is now almost a year since his initiation to Orlanth and the lad knows now that he has made the biggest mistake of his life. He finds he just does not get on with his two brothers and his cousins, hotheads all. He is desperate to find a way to get out of this mess.

His devotion to Pavis is known by all and he is commonly to be found at the temple. It was, indeed, Fassbinder who enrolled him in the constabulary. But Askul finds the man a funny fish indeed and now does what he can to distance himself from the head of the watch.

Poor Askul! Well, at least Indrubal seems to like the lad. And so he should, for Askul has done what he can to please his sweetheart's father/uncle (?). Indrinna is so very beautiful! Such a wonderful person and with such a good head on her shoulders, so innocent and in need of protection in this dangerous world! Askul feels sick, in the pit of his somach, when he is away from her. [Oh boy]

Askul is saving up. If he can afford a room all of his own, or who knows two, then he might be able to ask for her hand before long. One or two stallholders are helping him with this, in return for the odd bit of help from Askul. Some of the older members of the watch told him it was all right to do this, so...
