When Wren the Winter Rose came from her forest she was the beautiful elven Ingenue, soft of voice and kind in manner. She found a place in a small, human settlement at the foot of a mountain, working at a small saloon where the crowd was rough, but kind, and well mannered to the other worldly woman in their presence.
She was happy in those first few weeks, as everything was new and fresh, but soon enough it grew dull, and she could no longer keep any interest in it. Days later a high roller came into town, setting up a high stakes game of cards. The constantly changing game entranced Wren, who surprised all there by sitting down at the table, putting her wages in front of herself to buy in.
It was no surprise that she lost, but she did not care. There was something new in this game, something fresh, and the next day she left with the High Roller, seeking out new adventures and learning all he had to teach her of the game.
On a Dragon Class Super Pleasure Steam River Boat the High Roller was shot down by the Steely Eyed Killer. The Steely Eyed Killer accused the High Roller of cheating. Maybe it was true. The end effect was the same either way as the High Roller lay dead. Wren followed him, some thought for revenge, and some thought she had just gone crazy, but the truth was the Wren had seen something new in the flash of the Steely Eyed Killer's guns, and she wanted that.
She fell in with the Steely Eyed Killer, and he taught her his art as she had learned the High Roller's art. The shuffle of a deck, the spin of a cylinder, all merged in their chaotic beauty as Wren saw and experience many wonderful things. The hard life of an outlaw was completely different from the pleasures enjoyed as the High Roller's companion, but she did not care, all she cared for was the experience.
Eventually, after several bank robberies, the Steely Eyed Killer met his demise killed by the members of a squad of Royal Air Rangers. Wren escaped unseen, and would eventually return to society calling herself Black Wren, though still answering to Wren. Astride a steam powered motorcycle, a pair of pistols at her side, a deck of cards always in the pocket of a well tailored suit, she goes where she might, always seeking a new experience.
