Evan is practically ethereal. Pale, pale skin, light blue eyes, blond hair, tall and thin and lithe. He’s a very pretty boy.

And he's sweet. That’s really the right word for it. He wants people to be happy, and he hates conflict and fighting. He was the kid at the bottom of the pecking order for a long time on the streets of Oakland, running from gangs and hiding from monsters. He’s always been pretty, delicate, and that’s a recipe for being miserable when toughness and hardness is what keeps you alive. He had to do a lot of things he hated to stay alive and safe, but he’s learned to keep his chin up no matter what.

Which is a good quality in an Anchor. Nothing really gets to Evan any more – he doesn’t hold grudges, he listens, he knows that you didn’t really mean it. He’s used to faking it until he makes it.

Which is going to make this tough. Rick was his best friend. But there must have been something inside him that he never told Evan, and that’s what killed him. Evan’s pretty sure he knows what it was. Maybe if Evan had been a little braver, *he* could have said something, let Rick know that it was okay with him if they were more than just friends.

It was Raymond who brought him back from the guilt. Silly, laughing, never-say-die Raymond who wouldn't let him sulk in his room and beat himself up. Raymond who got him drunk the first time, Raymond who introduced him to the dubious wonders of his secret collection, Raymond who dragged him into schemes, pranks, and adventures until he had to cheer up in sheer self-defense.

He hates the idea of Raymond being a pilot. He already lost someone he cared about that way. But the Resistance needs everyone - so if Raymond's going to do it, Evan's not going to let someone else be responsible for bringing him home alive.

Evan's pretty sure that it's not a thing like it was with Rick. Pretty sure, anyhow. Raymond is his best friend, his brother. Besides, it's not like Evan doesn't like girls - there's... okay, so there's a real shortage. Jen's ... like a mom. Eeew. Katie's all bubbles and enthusiasm - she hasn't been through anything like he has - even though she seems like maybe she likes him a bit, she's too girly-girly. Ashley? Okay, so she's cute... but if she ever thought he was even looking at her that way, it'd be all over campus in a week. Brandi frankly scares him - all that anger, just looking for something to let go on. Riri? Evan has tried to get to know her a time or two, but she's even more of a riddle than Rick ever was.

Raymond keeps telling him they'll go up to the Witch Hill farm camp in the hills and scare up a couple of hotties, but there's never time for things like that. Besides, those girls are - they're like - no, that's just not gonna work.
