"Look, just put them in the cells and I'll figure out what to do with them later; currently half the starboard air scrubbers are broken, the emergency supply vaults are sealed shut and there's another group of mutineers wandering the halls of the macrocannon battery." - Newly-appointed Captain Jestic Dunwich, fifth day of his reign.

"... The Omnissiah must delight in my suffering." - Enginseer Gene Markete Sylas, upon receiving the news of Jestic's promotion.

Background[edit]

To all appearances, Jestic is a rather absent-minded member of the Dunwich dynasty. While technically in the line of succession to the Warrant of Trade, being of the main branch of the family, he was so far down the list that nobody (including himself) expected him to have most anything more important than a position as a planetary agent or the curator of the house's private library. Perhaps, if his fortune favored it, a job as one of the house's lord factors after a lifetime as an agent for the same.

And his childhood reflected it. His time was spent with half-hearted tutors and he rarely saw his parents, whom were somewhat more important to the family. But, in a way, such a life offers far more freedom than a more prestigous position; with little expected of him beyond not bringing shame upon House Dunwich, he was free to turn his energies elsewhere.

His teachers noted that he wasn't a fool or simple-minded, but most certainly lazy and disinclined to pay more than minimal attention to lessons. He was, however, quite gifted at leading groups of his fellow youngsters and the younger servants in a wide variety of games and entertainments, with an occasional flash luck leading to gain for the House - although no doubt by accident.

It was perhaps because of this potential that he was assigned to the officer corp for the new vessel upon which the House set their fortune. As an aide to one of the senior officers, he could be relied upon to be loyal and at least mildly competent.

Like most of the newly-awakened, his memories of anything beyond a few days after the ceremonial launch were vague and fragmentary, but records that still remainedsuggested he had gotten into a certain amount of mischief (resulting in quite a few reprimands and scoldings).

Needless to say, being identified upon awakening as the Heir Primus was quite the shock to him. After retreating to the captain's quarters for a full day to drinkhimself sober (... it made sense at the time), he emerged to make a worthy attempt at the job.

And has so far succeeded reasonably well. His vague amiability, inflappable manner and mild suggestions quickly turned chaos and panic into order and discipline, and ahandful of moments of ruthless opportunism cemented his grasp upon power.

But now comes the real test - can he take a family all but vanished from even the Administratum's records and resurrect it, or even forge it into a power known across the sector? Only the Emperor knows, and only time will show what His vision has already seen.

    • +10 on Interaction Skills in formal situations or when dealing with high authority
  • Vendetta (Trait): No House is without enemies, and Dunwich is undoubtedly no exception to this rule. As its head, Jestic is liable to the focal point of their hatred.
    • Out there is a powerful enemy of the head of the fragile dynasty waiting to learn of his existence...
  • Duty to the Throne (Trait): Jestic is well-aware of the somewhat precarious position any sector of the Imperium is in, and how critical the merchant lifeline is to the lives of uncounted trillions of human beings.
    • -10 to Interaction Skills with sources outside the Imperium (ie xenos and chaos)
  • Brook No Insult (Trait): A combination of a sharpened, condensed and concealed temper, Jestic has a difficult time dealing with those who wrong him... or those that are his, for an offense against those who are loyal to him is an offense against himself.
    • Must pass a Willpower Test to allow an offense to honour or a threat to those under aegis to pass unchallenged
  • Loyalty (Trait): There is little Jestic has left in the galaxy other than the ratings, passengers and officers of his dynasty's flagship; he exerts himself mightily on their behalf and they can, in the back of their minds, sense this.

Views of PCs[edit]

As a Whole: "I don't know if I can handle it - I have a whole ship, a whole dynasty to run, and the best ones to help me do it I know little about. It's nothing like the games of my youth - there I knew each of my comrades... what they wanted, the help they needed, what they were good at. All the things needed to pull off the most marvelous entertainments. Still, I think I can manage it with them - just a feeling."

  • Maria Anitova, Seneschal: "Maria? Oh, her. Yes, I remember her; she was following old <previous spymaster's name> around, didn't smile much. Bright woman, had a way of getting you to open up to her; if you weren't careful you'd spill your whole life story. Where she came from? I don't recall; she showed up shortly some time after one of our early stops. Some forge world, I think?"
  • Vance Brillang, Astropath Transcendent: "Never really know what to think about astropaths. On one hand, they've been to Terra and stood in front of the Golden Throne - anyone who does that and comes back's got the Emperor's approval. On the other, that visit always seems to have done something to their wits. But regardless of... eccentricities... I've never seen one take a bribe, blaspheme the God-Emperor or being unexcusably rude. I don't know much about Vance - psykers seem to prefer to avoid people most of the time - but I've heard he's responsible and quite capable. They also like to mention his exceptional skill on the shooting range, which is really odd, all... err... things considered."
  • Vaun Koleck, Voidmaster: <pending>
  • Navigatrix Primus Zero Six: "Navigators are peculiar people. Do you know, they say that they can... oh, you've heard that one. Of course you have. Well, to be frank, she looks like a bleached skeleton from a distance, and seems awful twitchy. Never really spoke with her, us moving in different circles and all. Still, I'm sure she's a credit to her profession and the vessel, and if I can get her to sit down and have a drink I'm sure she'll unwind and turn out to be a marvelous conversationalist."

NPCs of Note[edit]

Leftenant Alice Banthic: Jestic's personal aide, this highly competent woman is has a no-nonsense attitude and is quite willing to drag her charge from his quarters to perform his various duties. Luckily, it's rare that she actually needs to go this far these days, but she still recalls the little scamp that gave her so much trouble almost a decade ago. A former guard officer turned child's bodyguard turned highly-skilled assistant, she still occasionally finds herself uncomfortable when dealing with her charge in formal or 'fancy' situations. While many would assume from the scar down her weather-tanned face and the crisp almost-uniform she wears that she has little to offer beyond security, she possesses a great skill for practical logistics that has translated well outside the military supply chain.
Enginseer Gene Markete Sylas:One of the mid-level priests that service the vessel's great engines, Gene is more or less indistinguishable from his fellows. He has, however, the unique possession of several aggravating meetings with the at-the-time-not-the captain (aggravating on his part). Something about Jestic really gets to him, and somehow he always seems to end up the worst for their encounters. Oddly enough, this never seems to result in actual loss or danger (in fact, he has tended to benefit; he got his position partially from the fallout of one of the Dunwich scion's youthful indiscretions), but he's not sure it's worth the irritation and frequent humiliation in front of his peers. He's not entirely sure on the man's elevation to head of the dynasty; he can readily admit (quietly, to himself, after a bit of alcohol-spiked machine oil) Jestic could make an excellent leader, but he fears the future pains he will no doubt incur.
Commander Eva Hargrave Dunwich: Head of the port macrocannon batteries. A rather distant (several removes) kinswoman, this woman grew up in the same circles as Jestic and was something of a friend of his; in fact, they had a somewhat brief romantic relationship before she got tired of his erratic and seemingly carefree manner. Their history makes relations between them somewhat awkward when they meet in recent months, but they both have independently decided to keep things professional, at least for the time being.
