Background Caspian Carter is the third child of a struggling single dad; his mom left (or disappeared) before he could remember her. Caspian's family is very important to him: his eldest sibling, April, is the "smart one," attending a nearby community college. She has a scholarship, but they're still only barely making enough tuition. Her curiosity and love of learning have been big inspirations for Caspian. The middle sibling, Tristan, is a high school dropout who's gotten involved with petty theft. Caspian doesn't really approve, but is desperate to keep him out of trouble. Their dad, George, works a series of part time jobs that leaves him exhausted.

As for his own ambitions, Caspian wants to learn everything he can... especially about strange things, for he has an active sense of wonder and dreams of another life, of fantasy and magic... and lately has been dreaming a fair amount about having a magic boyfriend as well... More "realistically," he really wants to become a reporter and ferret all this stuff out, so he's joined up with the school newspaper, where he's latched on its senior editor, Jackie, hoping to become her protege, and has a bit of a rivalry with Darren, another aspiring reporter from a more well-to-do background.

All said, Caspian is easy prey for a Dark Power. Oh, Caspian will say he's doing the deal just to help his dad out with money, help keep his sister in college, help keep his brother out of prison... but perhaps the lure of knowledge, of learning secrets, and of just belonging to the world of the fantastic were all more powerful reasons than he really wanted to admit.
