History[edit]

The only daughter of the Goldfield Royal Family, Lillian traveled between the Hundred Kingdoms with her father, the king, on missions of diplomacy and trade. She learned martial arts at the local schools around the Royal City as well as private tutoring in the deadly and secret Royal martial arts passed down from monarch to monarch for all the history of her people. She travelled the forest with guards when she was young, protected and kept to the paths, but Lillian always had an urge to wander that forced her to ditch her chaperones time and time again and explore the Yellow Forest and all of it’s many wonders. She would collect things from within the forest, finding valuable and rare items which she would hide within Castle Goldfield.

At the age of 10 while wondering the forest Lillian came across a secret waterfall, the most beautiful scene she had ever seen. It was the home of a forest hermit, Olive Branch who claimed to be child of the Forest God Nine Oaks. They soon became great friends and Lillian grew to respect him immensely. He would sit and talk with her for hours and taught her many secrets of the forest that her family knew nothing about. She would visit the falls as often as she could. There she would sit and read her mothers diary which she found while looking for hiding places herself. She had never met her Mother, she had no memories of her. Her diary was filled with ancient wisdom which she had been taught. Also her mother discussed life’s purpose; to be one with nature, she wrote, to find love, love so true that all nature would be in harmony. Her heart fluttered like birds wings as she dreamed of finding true love.

The more time she spent in the forest, the more her father would become concerned about her priorities. Still, Lillian managed to appease him through her talents in martial arts, as she remained the best fighter of her age in the royal palace.

She remained young and innocent years into her adolescence. As she blossomed into a beautiful woman that warmed the room wherever she travelled across the Hundred Kingdoms, she continually returned to wander the Yellow Forest alone, with only the animals and Olive Branch to guide her. But as her marrying age grew closer and closer, her father became afraid she would never choose a suitor. Many had tried to win her hand, but Lillian was more interested in adventure and stories, practicing her katas in the seclusion beside a hidden waterfall in the Forest, or collecting things from all over the many lands she travelled and hiding them in secret nooks in Castle Goldfield. She dallied with brief romances, but none could win her hand. As she approached the final ages considered proper for a princess to marry, her father finally became desperate.

As the ancient laws of the first kings of Goldfield decreed, a martial arts tournament was called. Warriors from all over Goldfield, neighbouring kingdoms, and even some far flung territories where Lillian’s name and beauty had been heard of, travelled to the Royal City to compete for her hand. The laws decreed only the greatest warrior of the land could win this great prevelidge, but Lillian would have none of it. She was absolutely incensed her father would do such a thing.

Besides, no guy at the tournament could possibly beat her. To prove it, she entered, wrapped in the scarves and wraps that her secret Royal styles used to surprising effect. She fought to the last round, where she battled one on one with the Duke of Ravenrock, the master of some foreign and seldom heard style, Egon. In the course of the battle, Egon uncovered the Princesses’ disguise. Suddenly faced with the prize of the tournament, the Duke bowed and gave out the match. She won.

So, she shouldn’t have had to have married Lord Egon. Or so she thought. Her father, desperate for an heir, decided Egon was the greatest in the land anyway. Just because he couldn’t beat Lillian didn’t mean he wasn’t worthy to marry her. Another point they strongly disagreed upon. Lillian thought Egon was a sniveling, false, empty man, obsessed with politics and strict physical discipline. She did not love him and she would not marry him!

Her Father had always doted on her. It was so out of character for him to be so strict to the letter of the law. Her father seemed so obsessed with her getting married before a certain age he was willing to destroy the trust and affection they had once shared. She was locked in the tower, attended to by servant women who dressed her for her wedding. The Royal City decked itself out in the finery of the most anticipated wedding in its long history. Lillian was herded around by armed guards and for one of the first times in her life she was incapable of escaping their watch. Everyone had their eyes on her. Lord Egon and much of the Royal Family of neighboring Ravenrock had gathered. Her father was waiting, his eyes filled with tears at seeing her in her mother’s wedding dress.

She broke down walking down the isle. Her tears came streaming down as she thought of love. She would never have it; she would be stuck with a man she could not stand. She would be locked in a marriage and like her mother, never truly be happy. She would not have it. As she reached the elegantly decorated podium, her heart began to burn with passion so fierce; she could not stand it any longer. Looking into the eyes of Lord Egon she saw what her life was to become. She saw her Mothers heartbreaking face. “I will not marry you!”

Suddenly, she exploded in sunlight and emotion. Nobody could tell her what to do. Nobody could tell her there was a deadline for love. She told everyone off, from Egon to her father to the guards, denouncing everyone for the frauds and control-freaks that they were. Some tried to stop her, but Essence suffused her massive train and gown, and like a glowing ball of sunlight dancing in the decorated main thoroughfare, she cut a path for her to flee with flowing silk and dancing scarves. Down the aisle she ran and out the doors where most of Goldfield had gathered. Ignoring the cheering crowd she grabbed a horse and fled for the safety of the dangerous Yellow Forest. Sometime near the guard-posts protecting the villagers from beasts and monsters from the woods, Lillian realized she could understand what her horse was saying. What the birds were saying. They told her she should look at herself in a mirror, and her horse, named Poppy by its own admission, explained it was because there was a glowing mark of some sort on her head.

Not knowing what she had become, and filled with all kinds of emotions she fled to Olive Branch. The old hermit said she should travel deep into the forest to find the Valley of Yellow Trees, where poisonous foliage protects a hidden temple to … whatever it was she was. Olive Branch knew the Immaculates called her Anathema, but Lillian had little idea of the concept. The Order had no influence in Goldfield. Desperate to learn what she had become, she traveled deeper in to the forest than she had ever gone before…
