North of the Brupek Empire are vast lands of rolling hills, deep forests, and glacial fed lakes. The Slaile River marks the southern boarder of these lands. They run for hundreds of miles to the north, gradually changing from semi-tamed temperate lands to tundra. The lands run for over a thousand miles east-to-west from the Cyllian Sea to vast stretches of semi-arid wastes to the west. They are populated by numerous small extended-families (clans) who rarely organize themselves beyond temporary alliances with some other neighboring clans against outside forces. While these clans are considered barbarians by the Brupek, they do not lack some sophistication.

The Northern Clans work iron into swords and a final mail, as well as produce quality plows with which to work their lands. They raise livestock, while also hunting the large wild beasts that share their lands. They domesticate and use horses. They have sophisticated and active trade networks that move goods throughout the region. Their only great weakness is that they have never managed to organize themselves permanently beyond the clan level. Of course the Brupek Empire expends considerable resources in maintaining this fractured relationship of clans.

Every few generations a powerful leader will rise in the north and unite numbers of clans together. This inevitably leads to conflict with the Brupek Empire. It has been several generations since this has happened, so it would seem the time is right for another leader to rise in the north.

Clans are tightly bound through blood relationships, both to the living and the dead. The dead grant protection and guidance for the living. Each clan has a shaman who performs and administers rites for the dead ancestors, and acts as an intercedent for the clan when encountering foreign spirits. Some spirits must be mollified, while others can bring friendly aid. Some clans also follow an animistic tradition, but most do not.

Tribes[edit]

Huburtavi are warriors and horsemen native to a foggy land.
