Background
Damon Kobal was just a young scholar at a prestigious school when his life took an unexpected detour. It seems that the Alchemy Department was studying the possible applications of vampire blood when one of the captives they were using as a source escaped onto the campus. Damon was among the half dozen students the vampire encountered, fed upon and attempted to turn during the brief time before it was recaptured.
In most cases there would be no recourse but to destroy the bodies before they rose the next night. But thanks to the very research that the vampire was captured for in the first place, the Alchemy Department was able to concoct a treatment, an experimental elixir that could undo the transformation process from human to vampire spawn.
Their results were mixed. Two of the vampire's victims made a complete recovery, fully restored to human. Three died shortly after treatment was administered. And then there was Damon. For him the elixir managed to arrest the transformation process but failed to reverse it. He kept a portion of his humanity but developed some of the abilities and urges of a vampire. Caught between two worlds, day and night, the living and the dead.
At first he tried to return to life as it was before and act like everything was normal. But his new state and the Hunger that came with that made that difficult. He found himself irritable due to his denial of his nature, prone to lose his temper more easily and eyeing his fellow classmates with an unnatural thirst. After a short while Damon realized he had to find a better way to cope.
Thinking about it, Damon posited that the best thing to do would be to find a healthy and socially acceptable way to channel his predatory instincts, a means to indulge his urges in a safe and productive way. And so he became a part-time adventurer, going off during breaks from school to join groups seeking treasure and excitement. Not only did this enable Damon to cope with his condition by getting pent up aggression out of his system but it was profitable as well, providing him with more than enough money to pay for tuition and have enough for a comfortable life afterward.
In the course of his adventures and schooling Damon learned to cultivate better self control over his vampire half. Not only that but he managed to refine the abilities derived from his nature. He improved his physical capabilities, becoming swifter in both movement and combat. And he learned how to give life energy to beings as well as take it. He was a new type of being in the world. A vampire's progeny who could heal as well as harm.
