David Jaffe is a Connecticut man, born and raised. He's now pushing 60, but seems younger as he's kept his height and stayed thin and clean-shaven. David's reserved and dignified, but warm, good with individuals and people he knows, but flustered in front of groups and strangers.

Before September 11, 2001, Brian's father was a senior partner at Day, Berry & Howard, specializing in corporate contract (i.e. non-trial) law. He and Brian had always gotten on very well, mostly due to a shared idealism and interests; David would've gone into politics himself, but he never really had the public presence for it. David's the sort of father who would've pushed Brian hard, but Brian really never had to be pushed, so that made things easy. As Brian came to surpass his father's accomplishments, their relationship mellowed into something relaxed and friendly, rather than paternal - Brian stopped being a son and became more of his own man and a guest in David's house.

The years since the Survivors disappearance have changed things, though. David left Day, Berry & Howard under a cloud of suspicion ("they brought up the 'e' word - 'embezzling' - but there weren't any charges.") and opened his own, smaller, practice. He also divorced Brian's mother, Miriam, in a situation as-yet described only as "amicable," sold the house Brian grew up in and got re-married to the mother of a girl Brian had gone to high school with. Strangest of all, from Brian's point of view, they had a son, now just over 3 years old, named Tommy.

Discovering this has been more than a little awkward for Brian who, while never close to his parents, had at least assumed that they lead static, unchanging lives. This change has left him feeling more out of place than anything and while Brian may one day get the rest of his life back on track, he now suspects that his father may have been written out for good.
