Backstory

The second son and third progeny of Sesus Marav, a Fire Aspect, a renowned warrior and Dragonlord in the 18th Legion and Peleps Suri, a mortal scion of House Peleps, Sesus Nevem was raised in the ancestral lands of House Sesus in the Eagle Prefecture of the Blessed Isle.

Nevem was a quiet child. His lanky figure, unkempt dark hair, droopy eyes and the permanently bored expression fixed on his face meshed perfectly with his detached and relaxed attitude towards life. The martially inclined Sesus were continually frustrated by his utter lack of interest in learning how to swing a sword or shoot an arrow or otherwise take an interest in killing people. Nevem focused on his studies - the histories of the Realm and the Threshold, treatises on the Immaculate Philosophy and even some on the Hundred Gods Heresy, studies of sorcery and necromancy - and acceded to the demands of his House only to the extent that it pleased him to indulge their 'requests'. The bad blood this created between Marav's line and that of the other families persists to this day.

At 13, Nevem Exalted and while that was a cause for celebration, the fact that his Aspect was Water instead of Fire became instead a sore point for Sesus. Marav was shamed at the implication that his blood was not pure enough to pass it on to his son and in a fit of spite and anger, he sent for Nevem's mother to travel to the Threshold where he was, leaving young Nevem alone.

All this only hardened Nevem's conviction to reject the path in life the Sesus had set for him and focus instead on his own interests. He insisted on entering the Heptagram, despite his father's urges to try for the House of Bells. At the Heptagram, he focused on sorcerous summonings, trappings and esoteric application of Essence manipulation, ignoring attempts by his tutors to engage him in more martial aspects of the art.

Nevem did not, however, ignore the social aspects of Dynast life. Despite being a quiet, bookish type, he frequented every sort of social occasion, from hunts in the eastern forest of the Isle to court dances in the Imperial city to debauched Cynis orgies. His intimate relationship with Cynis Rayne, an Air Aspect and a cousin, developed out of his regular visits to Cynis parties. The relationship fizzled after a while when the fickle Cynis tired of the sorcerer, but she left a deep impact on Nevem.

Upon graduation from the Heptagram, Nevem was sent a letter of summons by his father, ordering him to join the 18th legion as a sorcerer-technician. Nevem's response was to burn the letter and send Sesus Marav a curt reply declining the 'offer'. Things could have become very uncomfortable for Nevem at this point. Luckily,he found that an old friend from childhood, Tepet Yasu, suffering a situation not unlike his own, had decided to abscond to Chiaroscuro in response. Knowing that Rayne had set up shop there and learning that another old friend, Cathak Vyric, had ended up there as well, Nevem took this opportunity to join Yasu in her flight from overbearing elders.

House Sesus is very displeased with Nevem, Marav most of all. He is enraged by the disrespect shown to him by his son and has vowed to 'teach that brat a lesson'. Nevem has sent a courteously worded letter to the House elders proper, outlining his decision to travel the Threshold and enhance his education so he can be of better use to the House, but no one is really fooled.

Personality

Nevem looks and at first glance acts like a stereotypical intellectual. He is often distant, lost in his own thoughts and seemingly bored by anything unrelated to his esoteric interests. As it is, Nevem is sarcastic, easily distracted by mundane pleasures and can have a disconcertingly earthy sense of humour. He is also eminently ruthless and is prepared to go to disturbing lengths to achieve his goals, if he believes the goals are worthy. There are stories in the Heptagram....

As a contrast, Nevem is also possessed of a strong, if understated, sense of honour and fairness; a deep, if seldom shown, affection for his friends and a unshakeable belief in the moniker "Prince of the Earth" and in all the responsibilities (as well as privileges) that implies.
