Fortress is a soldier, born in Moscow who saw extensive front line action during the second world war. His powers manifested only late in the war, when he was the sole survivor of an artillery assault. He is wracked with survivor guilt over the death of his comrades, and determined that he will not let his fellow soldiers fall in battle again.
