When the dragons reawakened around 800 CA they found new races in control of the world. This was of course something that they had imagined might be possible but they did not predict the vast numbers of these new peoples. Humans especially covered most of the known world and their empires were a direct threat to draconic power. The dragons approached this problem from various angles. The more arrogant amongst them simply ravaged human towns and settlements hoping to cull the masses into something more manageable, and many were successful. But more often than not a group or army amassed against their attacker and destroyed them. Because of this, wiser dragons either kept to themselves or found more peaceful ways to negotiate with mortalkind, one such way resulted in the dragonborn. Even a mere two centuries later, the exact details have been lost and concealed by the dragons themselves, but essentially it involved those who wanted power making deals with the dragons who wanted a greater presence in the world. Dragonborn to be sure are not half-dragons, but they are in some way descended from true dragons, and most worship them as gods. They are very martial minded, even their spellcasters, and they take great pride in their heritage and their dragon patrons, seeing themselves as emissaries of the true gods of the world.
