I suppose I learned the entire sordid truth when I was four or five. I was behind the house where my mother worked playing with my cats, Shiro and Kuro, when the mistress of the Servants, Bicho Cathak (a patrician dowager) found me. ‘You are worthless to this house, unless you are chosen by the Dragons,’ she told me. ‘You will study and purify yourself in hopes you are chosen.’ And then she took my cats away and had them killed.

I was the daughter of a high class prostitute, from a distant Patrician line of house Cathak, only allowed to be born because it was hoped the mingling of blood lines might result in an Exaltation.

When I did Exalt one of the first things I did was to kill Bicho. No one missed her, and it was passed off as an accident.

I was sent to the Palace of the Tamed Storm where I was to learn that I was not the Princess of the Earth that Imperial Catechism had told me. Two of the instructors beat me so bad I ended up in the infirmary for two weeks. It was a good lesson. It was while I was in the infirmary that the head mistress came to tell me that I was to become part of House Tanic for I had been adopted by my real father.

She said ‘adopted’. I think we both heard ‘sold’.

I hated my first year at the Palace. By the start of my second year I did not want to leave. There was so much to learn.

I was prefect, and head girl in my time there, and after six years I had become a poisoned blossom, and the head mistress told me, almost as if she was proud. ‘Don’t forget to become a sponsor of your old school when you make your fortune,’ she told me.

I came to house Tanic to learn that I was to be married to Mnenom Rast, and old, scholarly man, looking to remarry after being a widower for nearly six decades. He was a dirty old man who wanted a pretty young wife.

I played the obedient bride with a smile on my face that I had learned at school. I took this time to learn as much as a I could about my father, playing the good daughter, as if my years in the Palace Meant nothing.

Ten years later Rast was arrested for treason to the Empire and put to death. He had stolen vital papers, many of which had been found in his private quarters. I was a widow, and a pleased one at that.

Still, I had not had a child, and Tanic suggested I marry again. Avar Cathak was his chosen for me. I of course married him. I hated Avar more than I had Rast, but kept up the pretense of a loving wife. I fooled everyone but Avar, who hated me as much as I hated him. Our days were spent slipping honey coated knives of insult between other’s ribs and our nights full of hate sex. I suppose given time I could have come to respect him.

However a decade later he died, killing an infamous Jewel thief who had working the Blessed Isle for two decades. I was a widow once more, but, no one was looking for the Jewel thief.

It seemed a fair trade to me.

I left the Isle for a time, traveling Creation, stealing anything that took my fancy while my public persona as a beauty, leaving a trail of broken hearts served me well. People expected me to throw a wonderful party, they did not expect me to be raiding the tombs of Anathema (those Golden and Silver armour and weapons sell for a good price).

By the time I put my world tour behind me I was a well connected, wealthy woman, ready to settle down now that I had had my fun.
