Background[edit]

Fazoud ibn Fazoud is an orphan. That he must have had parents at one time is evident by his very existence, but he never knew them, and cannot even guess as to what names or faces they might have worn. He tells himself that this doesn't matter....but it haunts him, in truth. Although he would certainly never admit it.

He spent his first decade as a beggar, as part of a stable of such youths. He was good at evoking pity, smart enough to learn other ways of obtain coin, skilled enough to pick a man's pocket, and fast enough to keep from getting caught afterwards. By the time he was fifteen, Fazoud was one of the best thieves in the city, and certainly the most ambitious. He knew that a wise man could steal more with clever words than with quick fingers, and set about proving it.

Things went rather less well than he might have hoped, however. Faced with the choice of either fleeing the city where he grew up, or losing his head, Fazoud chose the former....and has been on the move ever since.

Kambu is as close to paradise as Fazoud can imagine. So much wealth, and so many fools from whom to part it! He has made every effort to make himself indispensable to the Trade Bosses, and has become one of their chief sources of intelligence over the past few years.

Now, Prince Hasad is the heir to the throne of Ah'aad, a kingdom on the other side of the world. He was carried to these lands by a djinn, who was in turn directed by a powerful and thoroughly wicked sorcerer. Hasad has sworn vengeance upon this fellow, but seems content for the moment to learn all he can about this strange new land he finds himself lost in. This, naturally, necessitates long and frequent journeys, and he is often absent for months at a time...only to return bearing some treasure with which to surprise his beloved.

And of course, Abu Al-Rashad, is but a humble teller of tales. He is a familiar sight in cities all along the Silk Road, always bringing news and gossip along with him. He often bears messages from one town to another, and refuses to accept any coin for doing so.

No-one knows that Hasad and Abu are aliases of Fazoud. And he works very, very hard to see that this remains true....

Loves: Fazoud loves the Princess Rhodugune. Apparently genuinely, although he can scarcely credit it himself. Certainly the wealth and the status would be nice...but he doesn't need that, really. Not if he can have her. Whether she could live without these things is another matter entirely, and not one that he cares to contemplate.

Hates: Fazoud hates Nur al-Din, the thief-taker. A vicious man who delights in petty cruelties, and who personally removed the hands of many of Fazoud's old friends. He took particular pleasure in swindling the man out of a small fortune, and then vanishing into the night...leaving Nur penniless, naked, and covered with honey. The details of this story, which would be several hours in the telling, remain Fazoud's most treasured memory.

Has: Fazoud has his scimitar. Formerly Nur al-Din's most prized possession, this is a fine sword indeed....perfectly balanced, sharp as razor, and strangely beautiful. "Moonlight", he calls it with no small amount of pride. He wears it only in his true identity, however -- it is too much a part of Fazoud for him to carry it when wearing another face.

Wants: Fazoud wants fame. He hungers to make a name for himself, a name that will never be forgotten.

Fears: Fazoud fears humiliation. To be exposed as what he is? A beggar, and a man who does not know the name of his own father? Unthinkable. And unbearable.
