Lorvallen is an Eladrin Wizard character from The Warlock of Firetop Mountain campaign. He has achieved the rank of Septarch of Fallcrest, and recently become an initiate of the Spiral Tower style of wizardry. He is best known for his unusual choice of company and for his obsession with the final works of the archmage Starris. The character is played by deadskexies.

History[edit]

Born to a noble family in the wintery reaches of the Feywild, Lorvallen's youth was spent playing tricks on his older siblings and generally being a pain in the ass to whomever was handy. According to popular rumor, he almost started a war between his own house (Elivass) and that of a fellow young noble over a misplaced goblet of wine. He was sent on the eve of his fourteenth birthday to study under the Arcane Master of House Dominai, Altheadan, a period of his life that Lorvallen has never discussed with anyone. When he next entered the public eye, it was a released apprentice some fifteen years later. He stayed in the faerie realm long enough to take the oaths that rebound him to House Elivass, accept the robes and wand his mother had spun from dream stuff, and then departed the realm.

Lorvallen's first appearance in the Nentir Vale was twenty years ago with an adventuring company following a rumor of vast undiscovered wealth beneath one of the local ruined manor-houses. Though the adventurers did not find the treasure they sought, they did manage to slay a young white dragon before it could gain a horde of followers and become a real threat to the Vale and its people. Though most of the rest of that company chose to move on in pursuit of another rumor of wealth, Lorvallen chose to stay and make Fallcrest his home. Over the next years, the wizard adventured with many groups, facing all manner of threats, growing both in power and confidence.

Previous to Thunderspire

Ten years ago, in the maze-like ruins of Saruun Khel beneath Thunderspire, the wizard and his companions confronted a group of creatures from the realm of the Shadowfell. Though they were victorious in the battle, Lorvallen was infected with a wasting sickness that clerical magic was powerless to cure. Soon after their return to Fallcrest, Lorvallen slipped into a coma and laid between the world of the living and the land of the dead for many weeks. Before his sickness, the eladrin had been the picture of health, fair-haired and fair-skinned, a danger to barmaids and farmer's daughters across the Vale. When he recovered, his skin had changed to its current ashen tone and his hair had been bleached of all color, a lasting legacy of his close brush with mortality. It was after this that he announced his intention to retire from active adventuring, and took up a more scholarly role in service to the Septarch.

This, of course, didn't last long, as haunting visions of a place of power to the north drove Lorvallen from his books and back into the adventuring life. Gathering with companions both old and new, the group sought out and entered the treacherous Pyramid of Shadows, intent of wresting its secrets for their own. When the heroes re-appeared in the Vale some weeks later, Lorvallen bore new scars in the form of his blackened eyes (a final parting 'gift' from Karavakos), and a new apprentice, Danna. Only his companions from that journey know the truth of what 'Danna' is: The succubus Helasha, bound in service to Lorvallen for freeing her from the prison of the Pyramid.

On his return, Lorvallen once again took up the role of scholar, and eventually succeeded Nimozaran as head of the mage guild of Fallcrest. Under his gentle leadership, a few more recruits have come to dwell in the area, and the eladrin makes a small but steady income by selling minor potions and charms to the local adventuring groups (for a profit) and the soldiers of Fallcrest (at a steep discount). He's also been experimenting with several different recipes of hard candy, which he tests on the local children, and a brew of almost staggering alcoholic content that he's named 'Dwarven Sleeping Potion'.

When trouble threatens, as it has several times since he came to be High Septarch, he is always quick to respond to the needs of local political leaders, as well as local law enforcement/military. Strange as it may seem, he loves the Nentir Vale, especially the area around Fallcrest, and considers the whole area his home. His actual dwelling is within the Septarch's Tower, where he maintains the library, scouring it for more writings by Starris, an archmage that also made the Vale his home some three centuries ago. Recently, he has uncovered rather cryptic references to a great work of magic that sealed up a beast that threatened the Vale, late in Starris' life. He believes, quite rightly, that the binding laid upon the creature can only last so long after the death of Starris, and that whatever the creature is, it represents a clear and present danger to the communities of the Vale.

Current Appearance

Appearance[edit]

Tall and pale, Lorvallen's appearance and his bearing are night and day. He bears the marks of one who has sacrificed much in pursuit of arcane power, most notably completely black eyes, and hair leeched of all color. Intricate tattoos cover his arms from the wrist to the elbow, inlaid with magical pigments that help to accelerate the flow of magic through his form, an art thought lost in the fall of Nerath. But his disposition? Bright, garrulous almost, especially among friends. There is an energy to his step and a sparkle to his voice that belies his otherworldly nature and the obvious mark of the arcane upon him. He makes the most of his appearance, dressing in black robes that seem to move of their own volition, carrying scary-looking accoutrements of the arcane arts that he does not actually require to perform his magic and playing up the theatrical aspects of his craft as much as possible.
