Background[edit]

Father Troar was inducted into the Cult of Harnyssus, the Green Man, He Who Walks the Fields, the Bringer of Bounty, the Sower, when he was a very young man, an event which was uncomfortably long ago. Taking eagerly to his responsibilities, he soon found himself tending to the spiritual needs of the small hamlet Oakhurst. Joined there by his brother Ormkaul, he found much to his liking. Then the goblins and their grains-blasted apples showed up. Why would the Lord of Growth bestow such gifts upon foul creatures such as these goblins, but not on a pious man like himself, Father Troar often bitterly wondered. And he was not alone in those thoughts, as his flock slowly began to thin as his faith proved incapable of reproducing the apples brought by the goblins, no matter the prayers and sacrifices he offered to Harnyssus as he planted their apple's seeds.

Bad turned to worse when Ormkaul Troar, his brother and a hunter/trapper by trade, failed to returned from an expedition soon after the goblin's appearance. A search of the nearby area was mounted but no sign was ever turned up, leaving Father Troar alone to raise Ormkaul's headstrong son, Sertas. Worst of all, now Sertas, fully grown, had gone missing as well, heading down into the Sunless Citadel with his foolish companions, following a childish notion that his father's remains might be found inside along with the goblins and their cursed apples. Despite feeling every year of his long life, the loss of Sertas was the breaking of Father Troar's last straw. Bereft of his followers family, what choice did he have but to follow Sertas down into the Sunless Citadel? What good was his life if he could not rescue his nephew, what good his faith if stinking goblins could grow such blessed fruit while his trees lay barren and twisted? Joints aching as he buckled on the old family armor, he leaned on his walking staff and closed the door to his home ...
