Background: Father Valerio Manfredi is the second son of the Count Jean Lucca Manfredi of Asmuly. As part of the Selentium Patrician class and ruling aristocracy, Valerio was destined for a gifted life from the moment he was born. Valerio followed the tradition of the second son of such families entering the priesthood. With his family contacts, Valerio could have expected a long and comfortable life, rising to the rank of cardinal within 30 years, and with a real chance of the Patriarchy itself! But it was not to be so...

Valerio was approached by a kindly cardinal who took him aside and said he could serve The Saviour in a mighty way, far more important than ministering to any congregation. He took to him to a mysterious Coradian islet 'for a change of scenery'. While there, Valerio was initiated into the secret order, Sanctus Vernula. Valerio was convinced that this was the Will of God, and believes all that the cardinal taught him to be true - it might not turn out that way exactly.

‘Sanctus Vernula’ is an obscure sect within the True Faith organised and funded from its headquarters in Selentium. Lead by a senior cardinal of the church, only the most gifted candidates and those from the Patrician classes are chosen to serve God and the Church in this way. ‘Sanctus Vernula’ is Bacchile for ‘Holy Servants’ and carries out unique and covert operations throughout all Legend. The nature of these operations are often controversial and in contrast with traditional dogma. This typically requires secrecy and excludes the general knowledge of such activities outside the Order. Members of the Order are often embedded within the regular clergy throughout the Church, performing any function required of them. Many members of the Orthodox Church are aware of Sanctus Vernula, but is only mentioned in private whispers.

The guiding principles of Sanctus Vernula are to: 1) Maintain the secrecy of the Order at all times and in all things. This is to facilitate the works without alarming the general populous. Even the Pontiff is not informed to retain complete plausible deniability. 2) Combat Evil in all its forms, wherever and whatever it is found to be. This policy is to empower the Order to define evil in all its parts. Once evil has been defined it is destroyed mercilessly. This policy has been used in the past for the personal and political gain of some members, breeding a culture of mistrust. Valerio is largely naive to the second point, but could well find himself a pawn in Sanctus Vernula's larger game. He is streetwise enough (he has Intelligence of 18, after all) to know he might well be being used as a pawn, but will look out for himself where he can.

Valerio is currently posted to Molasaria to resolve some local issues there...
