Appearance/Personality[edit]

Hallander tends to wear various shades of grey in fairly loose fitting clothing, something that he uses both as a nod to his surname, and to their utility in aiding stealth in poorly lit conditions. He is of average height, maybe a little shorter, and slim (slight, even), with cropped dark brown hair, sharp brown eyes, and slightly weathered skin. He is in his mid thirties, but looks in his forties thanks to his rugged features. As to personality, he is a somewhat proud man, having earned his skills the hard way, on the streets and in countless ruins rather than in some posh boy academy. As a result, he is somewhat churlish with outsiders who question his skills, but he lives by the adage that everyone gets out alive when he is responsible for their safety. He is the epitome of professionalism at work, and tends to keep his cool under pressure, which occurs quite often since his specialties lie as much in disarming traps as they do in knowledge of the past. His several scars reflect the hard-won battles to gain his knowledge too.

His fears are few; heights do him no discouragement, nor do confined spaces, nor spiders, nor rats, nor snakes. The one thing that does make him wake at night in a cold sweat is the thought of letting others down, being blamed for his comrades and friends dying, of leaving them behind to suffer even if his own escape is possible. He will risk his own life to help others, and guilt will eat at him if he feels he hasn't done enough to do so, or that his own failings led to harm to others whom he sees as being under his own protection. This is his drive, almost a compulsion not to be thought of as a failure or coward. He also craves action, and tends to rest uneasily. Any spare time he has is filled with research for the next job, practicing his skills, fiddling with locks, lest his old ghosts rise and he be thought not to be pulling his weight. His lasting secret is the source of his guilt: His first trek to a dungeon with a small party led to only himself and one other escaping, the rest mauled by undead creatures and presumably adding to their numbers. His nightmares frequently depict one or other of his former comrades reaching for him with bony claws and asking in a slurred whisper why Hallander abandoned them to their fates.

Background[edit]

Hallander was born and raised in Sandpoint, and gets on well with most of the people there. His parents still live in the town, his father (Yergan) a veteran and trainer of the town's militia and an old adventurer himself (though a leg wound that has left him with a limp put paid to that career), his mother (Kerissa) a keeper of bees and purveyor of honey. His older sister Meganter followed his mother's footsteps in caring for the hives, likely to take over from her within a tear or two, and his younger brother Terren has gone away to the city to become a priest of Iomedae. His childhood was warm and loving, his family close-knit and thought kindly of by other townspeople. His father's stories instilled in him a sense of adventure and wonder, and he lapped up whatever books on old history and adventure that he could.

Hallander did fall in with a bad crowd in his late teenage years, however. Used by a local merchant with connections to an underworld guild to get close to the powers that be in the town because of his family's connections, Hallander learned quite a bit of knowledge of the underhanded arts, but when push came to shove and he was bluntly asked to repay what he had learned by betraying the confidence of the town's authorities (and in effect, being asked to betray his family), Hallander refused, earning some enmity amongst the town's ne'er-do-wells and ruffians.
