Once, there was a planet full of people of various religions, most of which were quite similar, sharing prophets and holy sites and a good deal of the scripture. Naturally, great wars broke out, because people being so close to the Truth just couldn't be tolerated.
So the planet tore itself apart in religious war, and eventually, one faith stood above all others, having dedicated every particle of its doctrine to the destruction of unbelievers. It was both the most fervent and the most effective, the most economical. Where there was an opening, it struck.
The planet was dead, and the faith, being composed of the only survivors of the species, reformed itself into a mercenary company of galactic renown.
If you have a holy war to fight, you call them.
They fight for money in the name of God.
Theirs is not to question or to learn, for what is there to learn that God has not already revealed? Theirs is only to fight forever in the name of God. Theirs is only to die forever in the name of God, to cast thirty pieces of silver in Death's face and die laughing into hell. Theirs is to fight forever even in death, for there are other battlefields beyond the afterlife, and so many contracts yet to honor.
