Permanent Record[edit]

Academics and Clubs: Hikaru Inugami's school history has been fairly unremarkable. The Kishi Jinja is located two miles away from the city, and he has walked to and from school since he first began attending Yamato elementary school. Records indicate that he did not develop strong social ties, although on six separate instances he was drawn into fights when classmates commented on his long hair and old-fashioned clothing. Over time such fights became less frequent, but more violent. This trend ended in Junior High, when he was removed from class for a year (see attached portfolio from his tutor) after his father died. When he returned, his behavior was markedly improved; though still picked on by school bullies, he did not rise to their provocation. After one severe beating, resulting in the expulsion of his attacker, he was left on his own. He excels in mathematics and history, but shows little interest in the sciences. However, his impeccable study habits have assured him excellent marks; his freshman English teacher has commented that he seems to spend extra studying time on subjects that he does not enjoy.

At the recommendation of the school counselor, he was encouraged to join the school's club life. He claims to have joined the Kung Fu Cooking club as a way to help preserve Japanese tradition and develop his martial arts in the service of others.

Interests and Hobbies: Hikaru has displayed little interest is extra-curricular activities, instead spending most of his time tending to the Kishi Jinja. Never the less, it has come to the attention of the school's administration that he does practice shinto magic on the school grounds and has a deep interest in mythology and the occult. While his lack of social skills has kept him distant from most of his peers, on occasion they will approach him for assistance in detecting malign curses or making minor charms. He practices discreetly, and this seems to be his only natural contact with his fellow students, so it has not been discouraged.

Family History: The Inugami family has guarded the Kishi Jinja for the last ten generations, and more distant records have been lost to antiquity. Their duties have been to maintain the shrine grounds and guard its sanctity, especially during the Kishi Festival in the dead of winter. The resident kami is a nameless Mishihase Oni, sometimes called "The Foreigner", and has rarely been seen in the last three centuries; never benevolent, the demon has mercilessly punished those that break its taboos or disturb its solemn festival. As such, the Inugami family has been frequently marked with tragedy.

Hikaru's mother died in childbirth, so he was raised by his father. In the winter of his thirteenth birthday, during the festival days, the shrine was broken into by a drunkard. The intruder defiled the sacred pool and broke a toro before falling asleep in the shaden. Police reports vary slightly, but in the morning it was found that both the drunk and Hikaru's father were dead on the shrine grounds. Since that time, the boy has lived alone (save for his dog, a wolfish looking beast named Inuki). A local catholic priest (Father O'Conner) looks in on him from time to time, and seems to be keeping an eye out for him, but otherwise he leads an intensely solitary existence, maintaining the shrine and studying for his classes. Fortunately the jinja's oni has been strangely lenient on him of late, inflicting far fewer curses than it has on past kannushis.

Rivals and Adversaries: Hikaru makes few enemies, but they come to him naturally. Black Akio another practitioner of shinto sorcery, has on more than one occasion proclaimed the superiority of his strange magic to the priest's influences. The junior has been frequently reprimanded for trying to draw Hikaru into dangerous contests. The true motivation for his actions could be more sinister; his brother was the same drunk that defiled the Kishi Jinja. Likewise the Thirteen Toyama Oni (currently numbering six on their club roster) have been known to vandalise the shrine and the surrounding area as an initiation rite. The rivalry between Hikaru and the Thirteen Oni is deeply tied to the schools' respective sports clubs; the priest has been called on in more than occasion to detect and offset curses applied immediately prior to big games.

Friends and Allies: Hikaru's best friend since childhood has been his pet dog Inuki (who may or may not be a kami). Father O'Conner, the local priest, has interceded on the youth's behalf on a couple of occasions since he was orphaned. More than a few girls at Yamato High lament his pathological shyness, thanks to his long hair and delicate features, but thus far he has avoided such relationships. Amongst the other occult practitioners of the school he has a reputation for skill and benevolence.
