Inglorious Monsters:Laeg

Background[edit]

The man now known as Láeg does not speak much of his early life. "I was caught between the Orange and the Green. A lad born to a mix-up like that goes looking for trouble, or trouble goes looking for him. And there's lots of Trouble to be found in old Ulster these days." Further enquires are discouraged. Strongly.

He is similarly tight lipped about the events that brought him to America, saying only that he needed to get away so badly he took ship with the Devil himself, and when he got free he washed up in New York. From there, well, a proud son of the Emerald Isle can always find friends in New York, especially one who's seen his share of Trouble and learned the tricks of the trade. If that young man happens to be a skilled driver who's hell in a fight and has a knack for being in the right place at the right time, than that young man will probably make lots of friends. And just maybe, one of those friends will be a big man down from Boston on business who likes the young man's style, invites him to come be his driver. And if that big man happens to have a daughter, and she and the young man hit it off, as young folk do, well, some buggers just have all the luck, don't they?

That's the story as Sleepers of Láeg's acquaintance know it. It's not completely divorced from the truth. Láeg doesn't remember exactly how he got from Ireland to America - he was completely caught up in his Awakening by the time he stepped on the boat that for all he knows he really did sail across the burning sea of Pandemonium in an iron boat captained by the Devil and crewed by the damned. Regardless of how, he ended up in New York, where he somehow managed to go unnoticed by any of his fellow Awakened for nearly a year. A Mastigos' talents, even untrained, are no easy thing to live with, and Láeg was in a slow spiral of self-destruction. Fortunately, business brought the Adamant Sage Cú Chulainn to New York, and upon meeting Láeg while catching up with old friends, he recognized the young man for what he was.

The start of Láeg's apprenticeship was rather rocky and even after that it was rather hard work, but Láeg knows full well just how much he owes the older man. Taking the name of Cú Chulainn's faithful charioteer and companion on completion of his apprenticeship was a very deliberate statement, and one he does not intend to regret. Láeg has had relatively few dealings with the other Awakened of Boston - Cú Chulainn was (and technically still is) a Solitaire, and Láeg's work shoring up the Arrow's influence among the Irish communities of Boston only rarely brought him into contact with other Mages. There was, however, one sole, shining exception to this isolation. Cú Chulainn's daughter, a medical student and recently Awakened Thyrus who took the Shadow Name of Maev. It is perhaps unsurprising that the two youngsters, reeling and without peers in the strange new world they found themselves, would strike up a deep connection. Things between them were almost at the point where lasting promises would be made when the war, and the OSS's recruitment efforts intervened.

The OSS didn't come looking for Láeg specifically. Rather, they had managed to acquire some form of leverage over Boston's Hierarch, and the man pointed them at Cú Chulainn to save his own skin. Originally Cú Chulainn had no intention of loaning out any of his subordinates to the government to pay another man's debts, but the Guardians of the Veil got involved, calling in favours and otherwise applying pressure to get someone sent - doubtless wishing to embed a Mage in the OSS's operations for their own reasons. Láeg volunteered to be that Mage, knowing that otherwise Cú Chulainn would go himself rather than consign one of his subordinates to the morass the OSS's proposed operation would prove to be.

Láeg's not exactly happy to be working for the Man, even the American Man, but the promise of some good fights and interesting challenges makes up for most of it. For the rest, well, annoying his would-be 'handler' from the Guardians, and tweaking his nominal superiors noses when they get to whiney is enough to be getting on with.

Appearance[edit]

Láeg.jpg

Láeg is a tall, youngish man with an intimidating cast to his sharp features. His nose has been broken repeatedly, and he has a number of small scars across his face and body. His hair and eyes are dark, and he wears his spiky hair in a short, low ponytail. He has a number of small tattoos, mostly bands of Celtic knot work with High Speech runes worked into them.

Legacy Attainments[edit]

First: Rós Tuartha

Prerequisites: Initiation By reading the ripples conflict creates in the world, the Hound is able to predict the effects a violent encounter will have. By considering a fight they are shortly to be involved in, they can get a sense of its likely consequences for them. By studying a strategy, they get a sense of the likely results of its implementation. By considering a defeated foe, they get a sense of the consequences of killing or sparing them. In all cases, the impression is broad and vague, though the Hound always knows if it bodes good or ill. (You will gain great glory but suffer great harm, a great host will fall into disarray, you will meet again on a field of battle, etc.)

Optional: Space 1 When in battle, the Hound may pulse their senses outwards, briefly perceiving all about them without obstruction, as the spell 'The Outward and Inward Eye' (Core pg174).
