Background[edit]

Born in 13 Mar 1980 to Michael Antonio DiSanti, an NYPD homicide detective of Italian descent and Nadia Alexievna Rudiakova, a Russian émigré, Irina Michaela DiSanti grew up in a third floor apartment just north of 79th and Amsterdam, two blocks off Central Park West. New York in the 1980s was a dirty, dangerous and desperate town, marked by violence and misery, destruction and decay lying side by side with glitz and glamour, big wigs and brownstones. Even so, it was possible to make a living, keep your body and soul together, and make plans for a family and a future. DiSanti met Rudiakova one winter day as he was canvassing a crime scene and she was walking home from her midnight shift at a local bakery. They were quietly married less than a year later by a JP of DiSanti’s acquaintance and the precinct mug shot photographer provided the Polaroids of the event. Rudiakova learned she was pregnant not three weeks afterward. Given the privations of growing up in the Soviet Union, Nadia’s health was never very strong and bearing her baby into the world made it plain she could never risk another. Permanent steps were taken and Irina grew up an only child.

Irina was much loved as a consequence, as well as pressured to excel in academics, and to the extent her parents’ income could afford, was stinted for nothing by way of affection or intellectual support. It was an equal source of pride and consternation when she evinced an early interest in her father’s police work and discussions over the dinner table sometimes turned gruesome as Irina dragged the details out of her father. Over time, he realized she had a flair for investigatory work and developed the habit of presenting her with puzzles cobbled together from assorted cold cases and while there was no solving the imaginary crimes from the material presented, they were good training. Her tenacity served her well in school. She excelled in language arts, social studies, and sciences, less so with mathematics though her grades were solidly above average in those subjects. It wasn’t much of a surprise when she announced her intention of majoring in political science in college as preparation for a career in law enforcement. She graduated with a 3.95 grade average. It stood her in good stead when she went to the Police Academy, following her father’s footsteps into the force.

With her father’s ethnic background, it practically goes without saying Irina was brought up Catholic. Her mother was brought up in true Soviet atheism...but had a grandmother who still clung to the Russian Orthodox faith and who had managed to pass it on to her granddaughter before dying. Michael’s family was originally put off by his marrying a woman outside the fold, as it were, but they eventually came around when it became apparent that Nadia had no interest in causing controversy over religious matters. She was happy to defer that decision to Michael and Irina grew up with an appreciation for her mother’s faith even as she was thoroughly taught her catechism and confirmed in the Catholic faith.


Psychological Profile[edit]

Irina’s a thinker. She prefers to think things out, sometimes to death, to uncover all the angles. She loves puzzles and word games, mysteries and tracking down clues. Her father shared this bent as a NYPD Homicide detective, and when she was growing up, he would share parts of his work with Irina over dinner. Nothing from current cases he worked on but elements culled from many different cases and presented as a hypothetical crime with a clearly defined victim, perp, and means, motive and opportunity.

Irina is stubborn and at times can be an extremely driven individual. She pushed herself to her limits pursuing her dream of being a Detective in Homicide, in a competitive professional environment in a crime-ridden city, in as short a time as possible even as she stinted nothing in her performance as a beat cop. She achieved her goal and had a good run before being sidelined by a job-incurred injury. Recovering from it was something that she could not completely overcome, despite her iron will to succeed and after a year of chronic illness, she was retired from the force on disability. It was a crushing blow but Irina didn’t take it lying down. She picked herself up and despite her illness pushed herself to complete her training for a private investigator’s license. It was in that capacity that she got a job offer in Natchez and seeking a change of scene, she took it.

Physical Description: 31 years old, Caucasian, brown on brown, 5'-9", and 140 pounds with an athletic build. She's got some muscle tone, even with her health somewhat broken. (see Flaws, below) She prefers comfort over couture but knows how to dress appropriately for the occasion. When attire is not an issue, she prefers trousers over skirts, boots over high heels, and simple shirts over anything froufy or complicated. Jewelry is kept to a minimum: a man's digital/analog watch on her left wrist. Irina wears a gun most days and nights and is licensed to carry concealed, though has gone unarmed as necessary. She has a brisk step and a deliberate way of moving, what some might call a cop walk. As she moves, she pays attention to her surroundings and keeps an eye on people as much as she can.

Chronic Illness (4 pts) Migraines: They can be debilitating, are due to a head injury, and have lingered on well beyond the injury’s recovery. Sometimes they build up over a span of days before hitting her, making her take extra care in what she does to avoid triggering them. The pain ranges from merely painful to debilitating—laying her flat out. They are triggered by irregular means: sometimes it’s stress, or caffeine, or loud noise, or lack of sleep, or …. They occur at irregular times: sometimes without warning or sometimes with warning; sometimes they are frequent and sometimes she goes for months before suffering another one. They last for irregular lengths of time:sometimes they last mere minutes, others for hours or days. They are predictably unpredictable. The doctors now think they are psycho-somatic and have recommended psychiatric treatment. Irina has so far refused to entertain the idea.
(Die penalties: Irina must sleep for 10 hours to allow a migraine to pass or suffer a -3 die penalty to her dice pool and raise her target numbers by 2. The penalties remain in effect until Irina gets the requisite 10 hours of sleep.)
Broken Health (3 pts): Due to the insomnia and the migraines, Irina isn’t at the top of her game. Her stamina is not what it once was and any sport or activity that’s percussive on the body—running/jogging, sparring, boxing, brawling, sometimes even loud noises like firing her gun—has a chance to trigger a migraine.
Insomniac (2 pts): Memories of her captivity and beating make it hard for her to sleep. She’s a night owl as a result, and spends the time reading and learning and trawling on the internet.

Nightmares (1 pt): She has nightmares. Not quite PTSD. But they do interrupt her sleep.

Enemy (3 pts): She pissed someone off when she was on the force. Not sure who. The people who captured her may or may not be connected to any case she was working on that she can verify, but that doesn’t preclude criminal parties trading favors against a particularly annoying LEO.
Hunted (4 pts): As a consequence of her time on the force, she might also have people hunting her. She put a lot of people away when she was a detective.
