Jacob Miris served in the Ishpeming military since he was a teenager. But after a rift demon ambushed his reconnaissance patrol and left him for dead as the sole survivor, he changed. Went cuckoo, the psych evaluator said. So he was discharged, won a small fortune gambling, and bought an ex-military combat robot. If he had to fight, he sure wasn't going to do it as a grunt no more.

He made his way south and west, picking up small jobs -- enough to keep him moving, not enough to pay his gambling debts as his luck ran out. Sometimes he would protect a town from raiders. Other times, he'd lend some muscle to the bandits doing the raiding. More often than not, the Beast wasn't working, and he'd had to do things the hard way as an infantry soldier again. Sometimes, Jacob himself was the only one who could do the fixing. But he tracked down a supplier with the needed parts somewhere down in Texas, and the Beast is just about working right. But he needs to find a job, fast, because it's just a matter of time before it breaks down again.
