NPCs from Ash White's backstory

Henry Armitage

A researcher from Miskatonic University, Professor Armitage has been fighting a desperate struggle to defend mankind from the Elder Gods for decades now. He has learned some magic, and is extremely knowledgeable about such matters. He is very thoughtful, and considers his actions carefully.

John Morgan

Professor Armitage's young protege, John Morgan is impulsive and inclined to take direct action in all cases. He doesn't know much magic, but is very physically competent. He also has a terrible track record for falling in love with women who turn out to be Deep One spawn, become possessed by Ephraim Waite, get their brains removed and placed in a can by Fungi from Yuggoth, etc. One of these was Ashtoreth White.

Ephraim Waite

Ephraim Waite is a wizard of considerable power and terrifying evil. He has somehow learned a spell (possibly by research on the Great Race of Yith) that lets him switch bodies with someone; he has used this power to live for centuries, accumulating dark powers and knowledge.

The Marsh Family

The Marsh Family has been breeding with Deep Ones for years; most of them will, at some point in their lives, metamorphose into Deep Ones.

Deep One genes are dominant, and even distant branches of the Marsh Family can have members grow gills unexpectedly during their lifetimes.

Randolph Carter

A mysterious occultist who is able to enter the Dreamlands; he uses this power to travel around the world, and often provides useful advice to Armitage and Morgan, although they find it discomfiting how close he seems to be to nonhuman forces.

Richard Upton Pickman, King of the Ghouls

Richard Upton Pickman, while raised human, is the king of the ghouls. Perhaps because of his human upbringing, he's a bit more friendly to humans than most of his kin. He's also a very skilled artist, although most of his paintings feature subject matter than can drive men mad.

Herbert West, Re-Animator

Herbert West discovered a formula that can revive dead tissue. It works very well, and it was ultimately used on him by an army of undead that he'd created so that they could prolong their revenge on him. He is mad and utterly ruthless in his studies of the nature of life and death. Since his death and reanimation, he is also essentially unkillable.

The Reverend Nye

A mysterious and sinister figure, the Reverend Nye turns up frequently to advance the agenda of the Elder Gods. He has unparalleled knowledge of the terrors of the Outside, and is apparently able to shapeshift and/or teleport. He rarely takes direct action, however, instead providing materials, training, and communications to cultists or other figures, letting them do the work.

It is believed that Nye is, in fact, a human shape taken by Nyarlathotep, the Messenger of the Outer Gods.

The Reverend Nye helped teach the mystical secrets to Ashtoreth White, and has expressed interest in guiding her back to his side. It is virtually certain that he can follow her to other worlds.
