Background

Yana Ivanovna was a conspiracy theorist of the highest order, a searcher for the meaning behind the kaiju attacks - she even dropped out of high school to pursue her crackpot theories. Her search for the truth led her to the Tunguska crater, a place shrouded in legend even before giant monsters began ravaging the earth. Her tests on the site turned up nothing - or at least, not while she was able to continue them, because the kaiju Viy arrived within a week. Even as desperate for knowledge as Yana was, she wasn't stupid enough to hang around during an attack. Her attempts to escape simply weren't enough to get away from Viy's path of destruction, and a cascade of rubble and debris robbed Yana of her right arm. Delirious with blood loss and fear, she was only barely able to make it to civilization - if Viy hadn't lost interest in its prey, she probably wouldn't have survived at all.

Almost before Yana had fully recovered, she enlisted in Russia's hunter training program, its codename PERIMETER left over from the age of governments shrouding their people from the terrible truth of the kaiju. Despite her handicap and her less-than-fit physique, she met, then exceeded the skills of her fellow trainees, driven by sheer, ironbound determination. Upon graduation, she was given her weapon, Koschei Red - a prosthetic arm fitted with enormous claws and a chain to launch its adamantine fist. So far, her hunting career has been fruitful for a trainee - one kill to her name, represented by a tally etched into Koschei Red's shoulder joint.

But Viy is still out there, somewhere, and it has something that belongs to Yana.

Yana will never, ever allow anyone to get the drop on her again. She applies her determination and talent to studying the patterns of kaiju attacks, mapping their roaming patterns, which areas of the remnants of civilization they choose to attack when - essentially, the same thing she did before her accident. Only now, when she goes out to hunt, she's armed with Koschei Red and an insatiable thirst for victory. However, she prefers to work alone - she scored poorly on teamwork in training, and she privately worries that in combat she would be more of a liability than an asset. Compounding this, her anti-kaiju research consumes her life, and she has little time for socialization or even food outside of it.

Trouble: A Dish Best Served Cold

Viy took Yana's arm. Sometimes she wishes it had killed her, because then she wouldn't live day to day with the pain in her joint and the knowledge that the monster is still out there. Once highly intelligent, if a few beets short of a bowl of borscht, now her mind is clouded with constant thoughts of revenge against the monstrous race of kaiju.

First Adventure: Metro 2145

The wreckage of civilization provides ample opportunity to ambush town-sized kaiju - after all, it's hard to miss something that big from the top of a tower. Yana mounted a solitary expedition to map some nearby areas, preparing for missions, and located the ruins of a subway system, perfect for quick travel under the noses of kaiju that find it difficult to penetrate the earth. While she was clearing out rubble in the dark tunnels, she was assaulted by a small group of kaiju flesh mites - her first combat operation, and it wasn't even intentional. She was able to fight them off, wielding Koschei Red with skill in the dark tunnels, and returned to camp with her hard-won information.

Crossing Paths: Get Out of Here, Stalker

Aspect: Silent but Deadly

One of Yana's few missions with a partner involved the mysterious Iris Bojka and the kaiju Stalker, rampaging far too near to civilization for comfort. Their teamwork proved surprisingly fruitful, probably due to the fact that neither of them said more than three words to the other. Yana's silence served her well to flank and ambush the kaiju; to date, Stalker remains Yana's only kaiju kill.

Crossing Paths Again: Night Watch

Kaiju attacks at night are particularly deadly, given that most people are asleep at night and the beast might not be noticed until it's too late. One evening, Yana was assigned to watch duty with a shy young woman named Sarah Madison. Though Yana was recalcitrant at best to tell Sarah anything about herself, as the night wore on and they became more comfortable with one another, Yana discovered that it was much simpler to open up to one other person under the velvet cover of night than to comport herself in a more serious social situation. By the end of their watch, it could be said that Yana had made a friend.

Koschei Red

Aspect: Icebreaker

Koschei Red is an adamantine prosthetic arm that looks like it was built for a much larger person than Yana. It's painted a dull rusted-metal color, but otherwise is surprisingly sleek-looking for such a large object. Yana takes good care of it, and there are few dents or scuffs, save for the tally mark on the shoulder representing the dead kaiju Stalker. Rather than a normal hand, it bears a large six-fingered claw sharpened to a razor shine, attached to the rest of the arm with a considerable length of chain that curls inside when not in use. Yana is able to launch the claw like a grappling hook to pull herself around.

As long as there is a viable grappling point within range, Yana can use Koschei Red to swing freely in three dimensions.

Due to Yana's experience scouting many areas, she can spend a Fate point to declare she has been to a reasonable area in the past and knows her way around.

Although Yana is tall and bony, the sheer size of Koschei Red gives her a +2 to Physique rolls to move or break objects.

If Yana is wounded in combat with a kaiju, she gains a +1 to Fight against that kaiju until the end of combat.
