Karyn "Babysitter" White
Background[edit]
Karyn is a classic suburban American milennial, growing up on a diet of mixed messages of female empowerment and odious sexism. Her dreams of being an astronaut got sidetracked by the one-two punch of 9/11 and the Columbia disaster, but she still wanted to fly - but now as a combat pilot.
Because you don't get to pick your callsign, the blonde ROTC cadet who looked like she just stepped off the cover of a Babysitter's Club quickly got the nickname 'Babysitter'. But whatever, the guys are assholes, what else is new. She was at least good at making connections with the right people in the right places, at least those with an open mind.
She graduated from college with an electrical engineering degree and went off to finish flight training and start her service. Initially she was part of the acceptance test program for the F-35, but was able to transfer into an active squadron instead of continuing as a test pilot. She adapted to the F-35's vast electronic warfare capabilities quicker than most - and then the aliens came in force, and she was one of the few military pilots able to coax her equipment into even being able to see the UFOs, even if conventional missile intercept was still hopeless.
She leaped at the chance to join X-Com's interceptor force and work with all the cutting edge and reverse-engineered technology to actually take the fight to the aliens as a near-peer force.
