"Let's just say I needed a reason to get out of town for a while, and this looked like as good a place to hole up as any. Though I suppose me da telling me to run was a large part of that, he always seems to be able to tell me wha’s wha’ even if he were hardly there when I were growing up. Oh, I'm sure he loved me and me mam, but a wandering bard with sticky fingers really don't belong in the out-of-the-way village I grew up in. But he did right by me, after the goblin raid that burnt half the village and killed mam, he come and took me with him, even though I weren't really old enough, introduced me to his friends, and taught me what he could. I mean, he'd have liked it if'n I'd been musical like him, but I never had no ear for it, and he could teach me the other skills he had. Aye, by the time I was twelve I knew the lifting lay, he taught me that hi'self, and some of hos other pals knew filching and grifting and taught me that. Don't think I ain't grateful for it, neither. But you know how it goes in small towns, there's a little trouble, an’ sudden-like you're a stranger in town who no-one knows, and skipping seems like a good idea when people are talking of ropes and a hanging.
