Contacts:

  • Rubèn Angordan (acquaintance), cousin. Works for Greenworks Pharmaceuticals. We haven't spoken recently following a running argument about the morality of working for corps. We became close when I covered for him when he broke an award in his family's home as a child. He can get me pharmaceuticals and street drugs.
  • Amanta Fabian ("Beam") (acquaintance), ganger and on-again, off-again lover. Last time I saw her I helped get her new man out of a confrontation with a rival gang, costing me my best drone. We met when I was running security for her gang, scouting ahead and warning them of an ambush. She can give me a safehouse for a while, though it will be awkward.
  • Mariana Rangil (friend), well-known street poet. Our fame increased hand-in-hand when I created a drone video highlighting the poverty and inequity in District 1 and set it to one of her poems. She has her ear to the street and can provide useful street information.

Backstory:
Brilliant.
That was what people said about Octavi Cornes when he was growing up. Not living up to his potential was another common refrain, especially from teachers. But he never had either the discipline for formal education nor the opportunity; nobody from New Kowloon really had a chance. Instead he dug through junkyards and scrapheaps, and when he felt brave he'd raid Corp disposal facilities, looking for parts for drones and other mechanical devices. His parents encouraged this; it was as close to an education and a marketable skill as somebody from the Neon Jungle was likely to get. He supplemented his family's income as best he could, sometimes working security for one of the local gangs or casing a target. Every once in a while he'd pick up some cash doing other things, like making video of a concert, or slave-rigging his drones to a fleet for an art project. They didn't pay as well, but there was less chance of having to hurt somebody.

His big break came when Rangil agreed to recite one of her poems as the soundtrack to a video he shot, swooping through the rusted valleys of Kowloon and finally settling on a piece of graffiti, a stylized raised fist painted on an inaccessible rooftop. The video was an unexpected hit, rousing the slums to action for a brief moment. He took the street name "Kintsugi" then, after the old Japanese pottery art. Even something broken can be beautiful again, and the cracks and scars life gives us should be highlighted and memorialized, not hidden away in shame.
