Kross1.png

Name: Kross
AKA: Krostofer, Krosty
Pronouns: He/Him
Identity: "Gunslinging Kitsune Magitech Engineer"
Theme: Guilt
Origin: Scavenger Clan
Species: Kitsune
Gender: Male

Description:
Kross is a young Kitsune with shaggy dark green hair. His ears are also green, but darken to black near the tips and have white fur on the inside. His ears generally droop down and point out to the side when he is relaxed, but perk up when he is in danger. He has a single bushy tail that is green with white at the tip.

He has a thin build, but Kross is just wiry rather than bulky. He is no stranger to working or traveling, and all that time out in the sun has left him with a medium tan.

Kross wears a black long-sleeve t-shirt, baggy blue jeans tucked into his boots, and a light-tan short jacket with a hood. His various belts, holsters and pouches are a simple brown.

(The clothing colors chosen are an homage to the Machinist/Engineer job from Final Fantasy Tactics... and the third picture is shown for reference)

When Kross decided to do something about the Cloud Junkers he knew he needed a weapon. The Kitsude didn't have a lot of money, so he picked up a brass pistol to train with. It was too heavy and awkward for him, so he replaced the cylinder and part of the frame with a copper alloy, making it lighter and easier to aim. The weapon is serviceable, but the Engineer in him already has ideas on how to make a better version.

Background[edit]

Inventor Prodigy
Kross has a burning passion for technology and strange devices. He created an innovative yet dangerous device, what he calls an Arcane Key. When it is in place, the Arcane Key opens the doors and magical shields surrounding ancient vaults, but as soon as it is removed the vault seals up again.

The Cloud Junkers still have the original Arcane Key in their possession, but do not trust anybody to open it up and attempt reverse engineering it. As a result, they are hunting for Kross, to force him to make more for them.

Repentant Enforcer
Kross was part of the Cloud Junkers. While he was not a fighter, the tools, weapons, and ammunition he made for them had stained his hands with the blood of innocents. A shocking event led to his defection, and Valk will never forgive me for that. Or what happened to Makko.

Cloud Junkers[edit]

Tactics: Gaslighting (convincing the world they are innocent), Information Gathering, Secretive Raiding/Scavenging

Even their name has become a form of camouflage. Being called a junker makes people tend to look down on you, which makes them think you are incapable of big, nefarious, dastardly acts.

While the Cloud Junkers started off as a makeshift clan of salvagers. A collection of misfits and visionaries that joined together because nobody else would take them in. Over the years it became a place where people cast out by society could go and find a home and a purpose. It became a family.

That's what many of the members still see it as, and why they support it even though it's turned to more criminal acts.

A couple of decades ago a charismatic young woman named Cynder Gray joined the clan. She had a lot of great ideas to expand the Cloud Junkers, and they panned out. They salved lucrative locations and added ships to their budding "Junker Fleet." Cynder soon became Captain of her own ship, and a short time later she was Master of the whole Clan.

The problem was, after expanding to such a large size, it became difficult for the Cloud Junkers to sustain themselves. This was the start of their scavenging days. Even if they knew the salvage belonged to another city, organization or clan, they would get their first, pick it clean of all the most expensive salvage, and get out before anybody knew what happened.

Even that was not enough. Piracy became an option if they could be sure there would be no witnesses... or survivors left alive to tell the tale. This expanded to the outright raiding camps or small outposts.

After Kross invented an Arcane Key that was able to open up ancient vaults sealed for centuries, he saw the Cloud Junkers for what they really were as they raided a vault, killed the other expedition that had been studying it, and looted the ancient site for anything of value.

Kross burnt down the ship, with the Arcane Key on it, when everybody was on land celebrating their newfound riches. He thought that was the end of it, but word came about a year later that the Cloud Junkers were still opening up the Ancient vaults. Not only did somebody save the key from being destroyed, but they were also hunting Kross to get him to make them more keys.

Captain Cynder Gray, Master of the Cloud Junkers.[edit]

AKA: Cyn, "The Ash Queen"
Charismatic and devious, she is a master at manipulating people to achieve her goals. This applies double to the orphans and outcasts that are recruited to join the Cloud Junkers. The Ash Queen is a near mythological figure, and the idea of running away to join the crew of an airship while seeking out ancient relics is a dream come true for almost any impressionable young kid.

Kross wasn't involved in the clan back when she rose to power. He joined the Cloud Junkers about 10 years ago (when he was 7) and actually looked up to her like a big sister or a mother.

He now believes it was always her intent to turn the Cloud Junkers into her own little pirate fleet.

Valkr Thane[edit]

AKA: Valk A Purple Oni, about Kross's own age. Valk had been with the Cloud Junkers for about a year when Kross joined up and the pair became best friends. Valk worked with Kross in the repair shop, and while he wasn't as inventive as the Kitsune, the Oni knew the Industrial PowerLoaders and Labor-Golems like the back of his hand. Valk was also a physical powerhouse and skilled with a boarding ax.

Kross spoke to Valk to get him to leave with him, and the Oni became mad. "How can we leave all the other kids? How can we leave Makko?"

Valk sees Kross's running away as a betrayal, especially in light of Makko's scars.

Makko[edit]

A young Tanuki that retains much more of her animal-based heritage than Kross does. She felt out of place when she joined the Cloud Junkers, and Kross took her under his wing, becoming a big brother to her.

The night Kross set fire to the Cloud Junkers' ship in order to destroy the Arcane Key he created, Makko saw the fire and ran aboard to save the Key, since she knew how hard he worked to create it. As a result, the Cloud Junkers still have the means to open up the ancient vaults.

Makko suffered burns on her arms that night... extremely visible since the pink stands out in contrast to the short dark fur that would otherwise cover her arms.
