Backgrounds[edit]

One Sun Mirror (Artifact 5)[edit]

When the Exalted Host prepared for war against the makers of the world, Autochthon bade his children, the Jadeborn, open their armories to the champions of the gods. This blade was among the implements of war gifted to the Chosen, christened One Sun Mirror in honor of its mirror finish which perfectly reflected the glory of the Unconquered Sun and the one who wielded it. Faced with the nigh-infinite hordes of the Primordials, One Sun Mirror was enchanted to draw strength from the vanquishing of evil, to blunt the blows of those who would attack its bearer with concentrated spiritual pressure, and when the time was right, to blaze with the heat of a thousand suns and deal a fatal blow to the creators of the gods. After the Primordial War, One Sun Mirror's bearer wielded it for a time in unification of Creation, but a halfbaked conflict could not begin to satisfy him. Electing to fight his own private war in Malfeas, he left One Sun Mirror in his estates in Creation, lest it slaughter his opposition too quickly. This Solar was known by such titles as Lord of War, or Warlord of Hell, and his daiklave vanished into the mists of history along with him.

Until now. A young man called Lance has drawn the Second Breath bearing the Warlord of Hell's Essence, and the imprinted Essence led him to a hiding place known to only one other; the demon bound to guard it, who vanished with a smile on his face as Lance drew near. Now the ancient blade is his to wield against the forces of evil... and, if his heart is true, to save a world from destruction once again.

One Sun Mirror is an orichalcum daiklave with improved statistics (+1 attack, damage and defense) and the Piercing keyword on top of the orichalcum material bonus.

- When the bearer's anima banner is at 11+, it acts as a focusing lens for the anima to crush the will and intent of all opposed to him, inflicting a four die penalty to all rolls on all opponents within Essence x10 yards of him. First Circle demons, Terrestrial Exalted and terrestrial gods must pay 4 WP to resist this unnatural mental influence, Second Circle demons, celestial gods and Celestial Exalted pay 3 WP to resist it, Third Circle demons and Solaroid Exalted pay 2 WP to do so.

- One Sun Mirror draws its strength from the vanquishing of evil; every creature of darkness or servant of evil (the GM may have to adjudicate this) slain by it grants it a charge, which can be spent to improve One Sun Mirror's Accuracy, Damage, Defense and Rate by 1 for seven days. Only seven such charges may be stocked at once, and only four charges may affect the blade at any one time.

- Though strengthened by the destruction of evil, One Sun Mirror's true power is only unlocked when it is stained with the blood of a righteous man, willingly given. If the wielder pays 5 motes, 1 WP and bleeds a health level onto the blade's edge, the daiklave accepts the offering and blazes white-hot, making all its damage Holy and aggravated. Each strike is also enhanced by Ghost-Eating blow at no Essence cost, tearing the component motes from the spiritual corpus of spirits and condemning them to permanent annihilation if they are slain by this weapon.

Unit 01 (Artifact 4)[edit]

This artifact's name derives from the fact that it is the prototype for virtually every pattern of gunzosha commando armor in existence. It was subjected to some of the most destructive testing any piece of wargear had undergone, and even the powerful restorative enchantments embedded within it could not save it from the occasional trip to the workbench. In any event, Unit 01 was swiftly forgotten once all useful data had been mined from it, save by the Warlord of Hell, who decided to conceal it with his blade on a whim (he considered armor to be a crutch for people who couldn't avoid getting hit).

Unit 01's capabilities are not vastly enhanced over its successors; the powerful self-repair enchantments were removed to reduce production costs, and the various other features it boasted were soon replicated perfectly on the mass-production versions at a fraction of the price. While only middling in performance in the First Age, it is a matchless relic in the Age of Sorrows, and this suit of battle-scarred plate only reinforces Lance's image as a divine hero.

In game terms, Unit 01 adds 2 to Lance's strength for feats of strength or damage, adds +2 to Awareness and Resistance rolls and +4 to stealth rolls from adaptive camouflage, doubles his ground movement speed, grants Essence sight, adds 2 dice to his attacks and 1 die to his PDV, and restores one bashing HL to him every third action. It does not need routine maintenance thanks to the armor's own restoration enchantments. Finally, it is lighter and easier to wear than the mass-production suits.

Jewel of the Flying Heart (Manse 1)[edit]

One of the two Hearthstones produced by the Manse known as the House of Flying Daggers. It imbues any weapon it is set into with the relentless slashing fury of a northern razor sleet storm, and lightens its bearer's body with the Essence of Air itself. Mechanically, it increases the Accuracy and Dodge DV of its user by 1.

Stone of Pure Breath (Manse 1)[edit]

The other stone produced by the House of Flying Daggers. This one automatically regulates its bearer's breathing in a way that promotes health as well as breath and essence control, granting +3 to all Resistance rolls.

April Rain (Allies 1)[edit]

Elera (Allies 1)[edit]

"There we go."

Motivation: To restore the glory of the Dragon Kings
Intimacies: Lance (trust and growing affection), Whitewall's crops and architecture (nurturing), Dragon Kings (longing), Harim (admiration and mild envy), Sapphire (quiet reticence and polite disagreement)

Elera is a ancient Raptok Dragon Queen who interred herself in a forgotten antechamber in the bowels of Ondar Shambal to escape the Great Contagion. She was reawoken during the battle for Whitewall, when the flaring radiance of Lance's anima triggered the reanimation protocols of her crystal stasis pod. There was some awkwardness at first, especially since neither actually spoke the other's language, but eventually, Elera managed to recover her Universal Translator from a nearby chest, and communication between both parties was established. While initially overjoyed that the Great Contagion had long since died out, her exuberance turned to morose depression when she realized that she might very well be the only Dragon King for hundreds of miles around. Lance detected no deception in her explanation of her origins, and successfully petitioned for Elera to stay with and assist the Circle in some way.

As a member of the Raptok species, Elera has an affinity for the Growing Wood Path, which she uses to rejuvenate the fields and crops damaged during the fighting. She wards off undue attention through the use of a Necklace of Solar Charisma as well as heavy, hooded clothing, so most people just see a bundled-up God-Blood quietly encouraging trampled grass and burnt plots to spring back to life. While restoring the fertility of Whitewall is rewarding in its own way, Elera feels that she needs to clutch; and with no other Dragon Kings around, she is growing more and more despondent. She secretly wants to see if she can have eggs with Lance, but the suggestion alarmed him terribly. While he was too nice to banish her from his side, he's noticeably more fidgety when she's around, though he's still friendly toward her...

Elera is not much of a combatant despite her age. Her powers revolve around repair and renewal; while demons or Solars could probably perform them better, none of them can match the amount of love she puts into even her most insignificant tasks.

Flaws[edit]

Nightmares 2[edit]

  • Lance has dreams of his past life as the Warlord of Hell. They... disturb him, to say the least.

Code of Honor 3[edit]

  • Lance doesn't lie, not even to enemies. The most he can go is deceiving them for tactical advantage; but he believes in meeting a challenge head-on without hiding behind deception.

Throwback 5[edit]

"Gentlemen, I love war."

Motivation: To battle at the heart of the greatest conflicts
Intimacies: His demonic minions (camaraderie), good fights/opponents (excitement), mewling pacifists (contempt), tactical analysis (intrigue)

Lance's previous incarnation was the Warlord of Hell, a man who had become accustomed to the conflict and strife of the greatest struggle ever - the Primordial War - and sought to continue it on his own terms. When he went to Malfeas and found the fractious minions of the Yozis battling among their countless tiny empires, he knew that in an ironic twist, he had found his outer heaven in the innermost reaches of hell. The serried ranks of the demonic soldiery feared him at first, but then as he switched from his role of one-man army to the general's role he had been forged for by the Unconquered Sun, he began drawing more and more serfs and citizens of the First and Second Circles to himself, uniting them in the brotherhood that can only be found in a unit that has fought together through the infinite varieties of battle conceivable by Hell. He was not entirely unconcerned with the affairs of Creation, and once even sent word to the Deliberative of a potential traitor to Creation named Gorol, though his words were ignored until long after Calan and her mate slew the Thrice-Damned.

He occasionally reappears as a voice in the back of Lance's head, whispering and guiding him to take the more aggressive path to demomstrate his matchless skill. When thus affected, Lance becomes considerably less formal and downright chatty, especially toward demons the Warlord may have impressed into his army in the past.
