Background[edit]

Criminal

Vay is the bastard child of his Elf father and human mother. Despite this, he is loved by both parents, though he lived all his childhood with his mother in a human city, with only his arcane gifts (his talent and his woodbound ritual book) as mementoes from his father. Vay's mother was always poor and could never afford the Guild fees, nor to lose he only child to Guild tutelage, and so Vay developed on his own, in secret, and never shared that secret with anyone. When he matured and left his familial home for the big city, he kept that secret but worked hard to develop contacts amongst those less likely to follow Guild laws, both to find the things he needed to further his own studies beyond the meagre tome left by his father and, on occasion, to help others also labouring under a society that would not allow them the freedoms to do as they wished. He scratched out a living in the margins of society using his charm and gifts. With the coming of the revolution, Vay feels free as he never has before to work more openly and has begun tentatively seeking arcane work for those who will not ask after his provenance. Nevertheless, he harbours a powerful resentment of the Guilds and the tyranny they represent over what he feels is his own talent he has a right to exercise as he chooses. He has a mage's voracious interest in the arcane and, with the tentative freedom earned for him by the rebellion, is looking for new opportunities to seek out arcane mysteries and further his ambitions.

Feature[edit]

Criminal Contact You have a reliable and trustworthy contact who acts as your liaison to a network of other criminals. You know how to get messages to and from your contact, even over great distances; specifically, you know the local messengers, corrupt caravan masters, and seedy sailors who can deliver messages for you.

Personality[edit]

Trait: "I would rather make a new friend than a new enemy."
Ideal: "Freedom; chains are made to be broken, as are those who would forge them."
Bond: "I will become the greatest wizard who ever lived, illegal or not. I will grow until I can challenge the Guilds on their own terms."
Flaw: When I see something valuable, it is hard for me to think of anything but how I could get away with stealing it. It's been a hard life, and I know that wealth means power, and power means security.. in theory, at least."

Feats[edit]

None

Class Features[edit]

  • Spellcasting
  • Ritual Casting (can cast rituals from a spell book)
  • Arcane Recovery (regain 2 spell levels during a short rest once per day)
  • Abjuration Expertise (half gold cost and time to copy Abjuration spells)
  • Arcane Ward (When you cast an abjuration spell of 1st level or higher, you can simultaneously use a strand of the spell’s magic to create a magical ward on yourself that lasts until you finish a long rest. The ward has 9 hit points. Whenever you take damage, the ward takes the damage instead. If this damage reduces the ward to 0 hit points, you take any remaining damage. While the ward has 0 hit points, it can’t absorb damage, but its magic remains. Whenever you cast an abjuration spell of 1st level or higher, the ward regains a number of hit points equal to twice the level of the spell. Once you create the ward, you can't create it again until you finish a long rest.)
