• Cotar Ardares Ara Muphrid: Ara Muphrid was not yet Cotar Ardares when Minerva was born. She had never meant to yield to the flesh, let alone give birth. She pushed the child Minerva as far away from her heart as she could, refusing to acknowledge either her or the father any longer. Yet she felt a moral responsibility for the child's moral upbringing, and took a special interest in her education -- treating her like the least-loved pupil but expecting greater response than from any of the other children of the sect. Muphrid was a heard taskmaster, a cold and demanding teacher, never a mother. She never forgave Minerva for turning her back on the Order and embracing the Order of the Seventh Question instead, seeing this as a personal betrayal.
  
  Minerva knows the truth of her parentage -- it's hardly a secret for those who pay attention to religious politics on Nova Sparta. As her former master, she dislikes and disapproves of Muphrid's teachings and methods. Religiously, their views are at odds. And of course, though she long ago bottled up those feelings, she is resentful and angry at the mother she never had. What would she do to get Ara Muphrid to acknowledge her? To get her sincere respect -- her friendship? Her affection?
  
  
• Sodalis-Captain Edra Launtro, trusted second-in-command of the Order of the Seventh Question's Hammer forces. It is Yordanova who first put in a good word for Edra with the Order, allowing her to leave the streets and be educated; a few years later, when Edra was a young sodalis, Yordanova had her transferred aboard her own ship and supervised the rest of her training and career among the holy fleet.
