Triumph

The irony of Triumph is that it is in almost all ways a failure. Triumph was to be the archetype of small moon terraforming for the Border planets. It's bigger neighbor, Paquin was established as a launching pad for development of the carefully planned Triumph. Triumph was to be laid out like a Roman city, massive public works, spacious apartments designed in a Roman-style, aqueducts, and other developments honoring Earth-That-Was's great empire. A fluke in the terraforming process resulted in a chemical imbalance that causes the marble and other stones to fracture and crumble. The costs ran up as fixes were implemented, and failed. Throughout the moon, remnants of the foundations of great cities sit crumbling and covered with overgrowth.

As Triumph failed, Paquin succeeded, investment moved from the former to the latter, and the moon became virtually deserted. When the major developers left, few homesteaders moved in. They scrape a meager existence from its land, mostly raising goats and cattle, and growing what little they can. Traveling across Triumph one might encounter what appears to be ancient Roman, ruins, but is in fact only a hundred years old or less.

Triumph's model city, New Rome, is the only city of any size. Its Roman style is still evident, but their original purposes forgotten. The great public works like the unfinished aqueduct, now offering shade to a public market, the coliseum used for a cattle market and rodeo, the over-sized starport hosting the rare visitor.

  • The Castrum, was to be a major Alliance military academy, but it was never used except during the Unification War, and then regional HQ. After the war if served briefly as a Marshal's Office, then it was abandoned. The nearest settlement to the Castrum is Bearclaw, a trading settlement.
  • Summer 2522 - A string of reciprocal killings has swept through several towns on Triumph. The victims appear to be suspected Independent agents, or suspected Alliance operatives as both try to secure popular support (or fear) on the planet.
  • The crew of Summer's Gift discovers an Alliance agent posing as an apothecary in the trading settlement of Bearclaw.(Ep. 601)
